The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Iran have spoken by phone amid the continued attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Saudi Arabia. On Sunday, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan spoke to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Both discussed the rising tensions in West Asia and ways to reduce them.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), this is the first public conversation between the foreign ministers of the two countries since the recent escalation in Houthi attacks. Iran’s Foreign Minister Argachi said on Telegram that his country is ready to provide all possible help for dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Bahrain and Britain supported the Saudis

The Saudi foreign minister also spoke to the foreign ministers of Bahrain and Britain. Both countries condemned the Houthi attack on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport. Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al-Zaini has expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. He assured Saudi Arabia of full cooperation in safeguarding its security and sovereignty.

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband condemned attacks on civilians and civilian targets. He supported the internationally recognized government of Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The two countries also discussed de-escalation of tensions and economic losses in the region.

What did Jordan and the EU say?

The Saudi foreign minister also spoke to Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and European Union foreign policy chief Kazha Kalas on Sunday. Safadi praised the Saudi government for treating the injured Jordanian citizens. Kalas termed the attack as an act of terrorism. He said that attacks on civilians are not justified under any circumstances. He stressed on increasing cooperation between countries for security of sea lanes.

How many people died at Riyadh Airport?

A missile attack on Riyadh’s King Khalid Airport on Saturday initially killed 12 people and injured 309. The death toll has risen to 13 after the death of an injured Indian on Sunday. On Sunday, Terminal 4 of the same airport was attacked again. A fire broke out when the missile fell. According to the Saudi Civil Aviation Authority, one Pakistani national was killed and 11 people were injured.

Saudi officials also reported the attack on Dammam’s King Fahd International Airport. However, not much information has been given about it. Dammam is on the Arabian Gulf near Bahrain and Qatar. Saturday’s attack has been described as the deadliest attack in Saudi Arabia in over a decade. The continued attacks have increased the risk of war spreading across the region. So Saudi Arabia is trying to reduce tensions with other countries.
