8th Pay Commission: These days lakhs of central government employees are eyeing the 8th Pay Commission. Everyone wants to know how much their salary will increase after the new recommendations are implemented. In this entire debate, one word is resonating the most – the ‘fitment factor’. The employee organizations are demanding that the fitment factor be kept from 2.7 to 4. At the same time, market talk suggests that the government may fix it around 2.1. At first glance this figure may seem disappointing. Especially when the 7th Pay Commission found a fitment factor of 2.57. But experts believe that the real story behind the numbers game is something different. Even if the factor remains at 2.1, the employees will have more money in their pockets than before.
7th and 8th Pay Commission Math
Weighing the benefits of Pay Commission only by the number of fitment factors is not the right way. Any financial benefit depends on what your base salary is at the time of the change. Along with this how much Dearness Allowance (DA) is available on it. At the time of the 7th Pay Commission, the minimum basic pay was Rs 7000. When the factor of 2.57 was applied, the new basic pay was Rs. 18,000. This may seem like a big jump, but at that time employees were already drawing 125% DA. Rs. 7,000 on a basic of Rs. Adding DA of 8,750, his total income is already Rs. 15,750 was In such a situation, when the new basic pay of Rs 18,000 was implemented, the actual benefit was only Rs 2,250. This net increase was about 32 percent.
This way you will get 53 percent benefit
Now let’s talk about the 8th Pay Commission. Today the minimum basic pay of central employees is Rs 18,000. If the government applies a fitment factor of 2.1, the new basic pay will be directly Rs. 38,000 will be. Let’s weigh it with the current situation. Currently, as per 58 percent DA, the basic Rs. 18,000 on DA Rs. 10,440 is The total amount is Rs 28,440. While the new basic pay is Rs. 38,000, the employees will be directly paid Rs. 9,560 net gain. This increase is about 53 percent. It is clear that this hike is much bigger than the 32 percent increase of the 7th Pay Commission. The All India NPS Employees Federation has also confirmed this figure.
There will be a bumper jump in take-home salary
This amount of Rs 38,000 is only an estimate of the minimum basic pay. When the salary comes to the employee’s account, it will be much higher than this. Dearness Allowance (DA) will be fixed afresh on top of the new basic pay. Apart from this, Transport Allowance (TA) will also be added along with House Rent Allowance (HRA). Other Central Government allowances will also be calculated on the basis of this new basic pay. After combining all these things, the take home pay will take a big jump.
When will the employees’ wait be over?
Employees have to wait for this increased salary. The 8th Central Pay Commission was formally constituted in November 2025. The government has given the commission 18 months to prepare its full report. If we look at this timeline, the report may come out around May 2027. Till then the employees have to wait for the final pay matrix along with the official announcement from the government.
