Bank of America: America’s second largest bank has had to pay a heavy price for its negligence. Bank of America has been fined a whopping $1.2 billion for violating money laundering rules. The US government has made it clear that no financial institution is above the law. This move by the Treasury Department is being considered as a stern warning to the entire banking system.

Why was the penalty imposed?

Treasury Secretary Scott Besant has taken a tough stance on the matter. He says that when such big banks fail to fulfill their responsibilities, the impact is not limited to them alone. Because of this, the threat of illicit money is looming over the entire American financial system. The bank is accused of willfully violating the Bank Secrecy Act of 1970. This law was made to help the government in preventing money laundering by banks. The bank itself has admitted this error.

Links with terrorists from China

This case is not just ordinary money laundering. According to the Treasury Department, the bank ignored major threats to national security. This includes China’s money laundering networks as well as the hiding of illicit finance information along the southwest border. In addition, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) also signed an $11.6 million agreement with the bank. The fines are due to violations of sanctions related to Iran, Russia, drug trafficking and global terrorism.

What does Bank of America say?

After such a big action, a statement from the bank has also come out. The bank says it fully understands its responsibility to prevent financial crimes. They have invested billions of dollars in technology to overcome their shortcomings. Besides, thousands of employees have been specially deployed for this work. Of the total penalty amount, $750 million will go directly to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). This is the largest fine ever imposed in the history of the Federal Bank Regulatory Agency.

This is the third largest action after Binance

This is the third largest fine in the history of the US Treasury Department. Earlier in 2023, Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, was fined nearly $4 billion. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao also faced jail time because his platform was used for drugs, child sexual abuse, etc. At the same time, Canada’s TD Bank has also been fined nearly $3 billion. The Biden administration is constantly cracking down so that no one can take advantage of the system.
