Millions of people use WhatsApp today. From talking to family and friends to sending important information, this app helps in many tasks. But now people need to be careful of online fraud through this app. Hyderabad Police has warned about a scam in which people are being sent messages to try to trick them.
According to the report, recently a chartered accountant lost lakhs of rupees due to such fraud. Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjan also advised to be cautious and avoid replying to unknown messages. However, it is not correct to assume that just writing ‘no’ will empty the bank account in every case. Let’s understand how this kind of fraud can happen and how to avoid it.
What is WhatsApp ‘No’ Scam?
In this type of fraud, WhatsApp messages are sent to people from unknown numbers. The message will say that money has been deducted from your bank account. If you have not withdrawn this money, send a reply by writing ‘No’. Many people get scared after seeing such messages and reply without thinking. Bullies try to take advantage of this fear. According to a police warning, some cases of cyber fraud may involve attempts to access the phone or its data.
However, replying to a message is not a sure proof that a phone has been hacked or that money has been withdrawn from a bank account. So, instead of being afraid of this claim, it is necessary to be careful.
How can fraud happen without revealing OTP?
Generally people believe that OTP or password is required to withdraw money from bank account. But cybercriminals also try to target people in many other ways. They may resort to fake messages, fraudulent links or malicious software.
If a person clicks on such a link or downloads an unknown app, their phone’s personal information may be at risk. In some cases, attempts are also made to obtain banking related information by misusing the phone.
So, do not follow the instructions given in any unknown message. If you get a message that money is being deducted from your bank account, instead of replying on WhatsApp, check it through the bank’s official app or number.
How to avoid WhatsApp scam?
- To avoid this type of fraud, keep a few simple things in mind.
- Do not reply to suspicious messages from unknown numbers.
- Do not click on any unknown link.
- Do not download any app from the link provided in the message.
- Do not share OTP, PIN or banking password with anyone.
- Keep updating the phone and app from time to time.
- While downloading an app on your phone, check if it is valid and reliable.
If you feel that you have been cheated online, contact your bank immediately and complain to the cybercrime helpline number 1930. You can also file a complaint on the Cybercrime portal of the Government of India.
