If you got a PAN card when you were a minor, after you turn 18, you have to update your existing photo, signature and other personal details in it. A PAN card issued before the age of 18 remains valid even after the person attains majority, but the information given in it needs to be updated as per the status of majority. In this process, the existing PAN record is updated and a completely new PAN number is not applied for. Let us also tell you what is its complete process…
What is Minor PAN Card?
- Minor PAN card is issued to a person below 18 years of age. It serves as a tax identification document and is required when any financial activity, such as investments or transactions, is carried out in the name of the child.
- Since the minor cannot complete all the formalities himself, the parent or legal guardian handles the application process. A minor’s PAN card is linked to the child’s identity, but the application and contact details belong to the parents. It is not mandatory for every child to have a minor PAN card.
- What information must you update after you turn 18?
- First of all, check the information printed on your PAN card and the details entered in the PAN application.
- Photo: If there is a childhood photograph on the PAN card, you have to change it to a recent photograph.
- Signature: A minor’s PAN card does not have your signature, it may have the signature of your parent or legal guardian. After turning 18 you have to give your own signature.
- Personal Information: Check your name and date of birth. If any information is incorrect then correct it. If the address or contact details have changed or there are any errors, update them as well.

Do you need to get a new PAN after turning 18?
No. After 18 years, you don’t need to take a new PAN. No person should have more than one PAN. If you have a PAN created as a child, use the same PAN number to amend your records. Once your rectification request is completed, you will receive a new PAN card with updated information, with your PAN number remaining the same.
