The Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) has changed the question paper format for the Class 9 to 12 examinations from the academic year 2026-27. Under the new rules, the internal option available on two-mark short answer questions in core subjects has been abolished. However, in questions of three and four marks, students will continue to have the same options as before. At the same time, internal option facility for five and seven mark questions in subjects taught under National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) has been introduced. The Board has informed these changes in a notice issued on 15 October 2026.
There will be no alternative in questions of two marks
Under the new board pattern the internal option of short answer questions of two marks in main subjects has been removed. It means that the students have to answer these questions given in the question paper. They cannot answer by selecting any other optional question.
However, the facility of internal selection in questions of three and four marks will continue as before. That is, in these questions, students will have an opportunity to answer any one of the given options.
New facility will be available in NSQF subjects
The question papers of the subjects taught under the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) have also been modified. Internal selection facility has been introduced for five and seven marks questions in these subjects. This will give students an opportunity to choose options to answer these questions.
The board has informed these changes related to the format of the question paper in a notice issued on 15 October 2026. Currently this information does not mention any change in exam dates or other exam pattern.
Opportunity to improve marks in second exam
MPBSE started the second examination facility for class 10 and 12 students in session 2025-26. Its purpose is to give students a second chance to pass or improve their marks in the subjects they failed in the first examination. To appear for the second examination, students have to apply through their respective school and deposit the prescribed fee. While preparing the result, the board accepts the highest marks obtained in any subject in both the examinations. For example, if you score 60 marks in the first exam and 40 marks in the second exam, only 60 marks will be added.
