America has started getting diesel from Russia. Three tankers carrying diesel have left for America from Primorsk port in Russia. Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Alexander Novak gave this information. The three tankers have a total of 40 thousand tons of diesel. This is the first time since 2023 that diesel cargo is being shipped from Russia to the US. The agreement comes almost two weeks after a phone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. It is believed that Trump wants to reduce the rising fuel prices in America. Mid-term elections are also going to be held in America.
According to news agency Reuters, Novak said that the three tankers were heading to the eastern coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Russia’s Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) has helped with this supply. Kepler, a company that monitors the movements of marine vessels, said on Friday that a tanker signaled to go to New York. It was expected to arrive there on 7th November.
Criticism of the agreement in Ukraine and America
The agreement is being criticized in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called it a weak decision by a strong ally. Leaders of the Republican and Democratic parties in America also criticized it. Trump was accused of breaking American law. Last month, Trump signed a law that could impose additional taxes of up to 100% on five major countries that buy energy from Russia. However, later this action was stopped. Russian Presidential Palace Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also confirmed the departure of the first cargo. He said that the first tanker has been dispatched and regular supply will continue in future as well.
How much diesel will America get?
According to Novak, there was a possibility of providing 5 lakh metric tons of diesel to America in October. Trump said that Russia will immediately provide more than 3 lakh tons of diesel. After this, 5 lakh tonnes and then 10 lakh tonnes of diesel will be shipped in November. The 40 thousand tonnes of diesel shipped in three tankers is about 3 lakh barrels. America consumes about 4 million barrels of diesel per day. That means this consignment is about 7% of its daily consumption.
Decision to impose sanctions on Russia postponed
A few days after the agreement, Trump contacted Lindsey O. Proceedings ceased under the Graham Act. The law allows the five largest countries that buy oil and gas from Russia to be taxed up to 100%. Four other countries including India may also be affected. Trump has put the sanctions on hold for now, citing national interests. However, the right of action remains. On the other hand, the tension in the relationship between Trump and Zelensky has increased. Trump has alleged that Zelensky does not want to end the war with Russia.
