On the occasion of Diwali, people are looking for good discounts and gift offers for online shopping. Now cyber thugs are also taking advantage of this. These days misleading messages are being sent on WhatsApp in the name of giving free gifts, heavy discounts and Diwali bonuses to people. A link is also provided along with this message, on clicking which you can reach a fake website. Here you may be asked for name, mobile number and bank related information. If you share your information too hastily, your hard-earned money may be at risk.
How do cyber thugs trick people?
The method of attracting people’s attention by sending such messages on WhatsApp is called Phishing. In this, fraudsters create a fake website that looks like a famous shopping company or a government scheme. After this, people are sent messages claiming that they can get huge discounts, free gifts or cashback on Diwali.
In order for people to make a quick decision, the message states that this offer is for a limited time only. After opening the link, the website may ask for details like name, phone number, bank account, debit or credit card details and OTP. Often scammers also ask to download unknown apps. Recently, one such fake message surfaced on WhatsApp, claiming that the government would give a Diwali bonus of Rs 8,000. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) declared this claim false. No such bonus is being given by the government. An attempt was being made to steal people’s personal information through this message.
Follow these tips to avoid scams in the name of Diwali offers
- Avoid opening unknown links: Do not open links that rely on gift or discount offers from unknown numbers.
- Check the validity of the offer: Before trying to avail any offer, visit the official website or app of the company and get information about it.
- Do not share OTP and UPI PIN with anyone: Do not share confidential banking related information with anyone. Remember, there is no need to enter UPI PIN to get money.
- Don’t download unknown apps: Avoid installing apps from APK file or any unknown link on WhatsApp.
- Do not forward messages without checking: Do not share any offer without verifying it in WhatsApp groups of friends and family.
