Virat Kohli has added another major milestone to his remarkable ODI career. The former India captain crossed the 15,000-run mark during the first ODI against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, September 27, 2026. With the achievement, Kohli became only the second batter in men’s ODI cricket to reach the landmark after Sachin Tendulkar.
Kohli entered the match needing 59 runs to complete 15,000 ODI runs. He had started the game with 14,941 runs from 314 ODIs and 302 innings. The milestone eventually came in his 303rd ODI innings, making him the fastest batter to reach 15,000 runs in the format. Tendulkar had reached the same mark in 377 innings.
The record is another significant addition to Kohli’s long list of ODI achievements. His consistency in the format has kept him among the leading run-scorers in ODI history, with Tendulkar still at the top of the all-time list with 18,426 runs. Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting and Sanath Jayasuriya follow behind Kohli in the overall run-scoring charts.
The milestone came in a match where West Indies had set India a target of 295 runs. Justin Greaves led the West Indies innings with a century, scoring 101 from 108 balls, while John Campbell made 62 and Amir Jangoo remained unbeaten on 58. For India, Kuldeep Yadav was the standout bowler, finishing with four wickets for 40 runs from his 10 overs.
Kohli’s record against West Indies has also been a notable part of his ODI career. Before this match, he had scored 2,261 runs in 43 ODIs against them, including nine centuries and 11 fifties. His record against the Caribbean side has made the first game of the three-match series another important occasion in his international career.
The 15,000-run milestone also comes as India build towards the 2027 ODI World Cup. The ICC has confirmed that India’s three-match ODI series against West Indies is part of the team’s preparations for the tournament, with Shubman Gill leading the side in the 50-over format.
Kohli’s latest achievement places him in an exclusive group alongside Tendulkar, while also underlining the longevity of his ODI career. Reaching 15,000 runs in just 303 innings gives the milestone an additional statistical significance and further establishes Kohli as one of the most prolific run-scorers in the history of the format.
