After a long wait, Apple Pay has finally been launched in India. After months of news and speculation, Apple launched its tap-to-pay service in the country on Wednesday. Most importantly, Apple Pay was first introduced in the US in September 2014. That means it has entered India after about 12 years.

Apple has launched Apple Pay with Axis Bank in India. Currently, users can only add Visa and MasterCard credit cards issued by Axis Bank to Apple Pay. The company says that special care has been taken to protect users’ payment and financial information.

You can pay via iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch

Apple Pay is currently available on select Apple devices. Users can make payments using iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. The company has said that Apple Pen will also be supported on Mac devices in the future.

With Apple Pay, users will be able to make payments in stores without taking out their cards. In addition, it can also be used to pay online merchants and make in-app purchases. To make a payment at a physical store, the shop’s PoS machine must have NFC i.e. tap-to-pay facility. At such a machine, a user can make a payment by tapping his Apple device.

No need to enter PIN or OTP every time

The payment method in Apple Pay is quite simple. Payments are made by tapping an iPhone, Apple Watch or other supported Apple device on a PoS machine with NFC. According to the company, there is no need to enter a separate PIN or OTP at the time of checkout.

However, payment security remains tied to Apple’s device security system. This means that no one can get your card information by taking the phone to the PoS machine.

Card numbers are not saved in Apple Pay

According to Apple, when you use Apple Pay, your original card number is neither saved on the device nor on Apple’s servers. This card number is also not shared with the shopper during payment.

Instead Apple creates a Device Account Number (DAN). This is a separate and unique number, which is encrypted in the device’s secure chip called the Secure Element. If you understand in simple language, Apple Pay uses a payment method without revealing your real card number.

Apple does not keep track of your transactions

Apple says that the company does not store information about transactions made through Apple Pay. Payment related information resides between the user, the merchant and the bank or card issuing company.

According to Apple, with the launch in India, Apple Pay is now available in more than 90 countries and territories worldwide. It is associated with more than 11,000 banks and payment network partners worldwide.

How to add a card to Apple Pay?

If you have an Axis Bank Visa or Mastercard credit card, adding it to Apple Pay is easy. For this, you can directly add the card to Apple Wallet through the latest version of the Axis Bank app.

Apart from this, open the Apple Wallet app in iPhone and press the + button. After this, you can add your Axis Bank credit card by following the on-screen instructions. After connecting the card, payments can be made by tapping the Apple device wherever PoS machines with NFC are available. Currently, Apple Pay has been launched in India with Axis Bank’s Visa and Mastercard credit cards. In the future, Apple may add more devices, cards and banks to this service.
