There is an important update for NEET PG 2026 aspirants. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released a new matrix of postgraduate medical seats for the academic year 2026-27. According to this, a total of 63,177 PG seats are available in medical colleges and institutes across the country. It includes meetings of government, private and deemed medical institutions. There are 33,088 seats in government institutions, 21,892 seats in private institutions and 8,197 seats in deemed institutions. NMC has clarified that this matrix is ​​based on existing sanctioned seats. The additional seats sanctioned later will be included in the updated matrix.

More than 33 thousand seats in government institutions

A total of 63,177 PG seats have been provided in the new seat matrix of NMC. Of these, 33,088 seats are in government medical colleges, 21,892 are in private institutions and 8,197 are in deemed universities. The commission said that applications for new PG courses or for increasing seats in existing courses, which are still pending for approval, are not included in this matrix. Later, after approval, they will be added to the revised seat matrix.

Highest number of PG seats in Karnataka

Karnataka tops the state wise figures. There are total 8,323 PG seats here. This is followed by Maharashtra with 6,992, Tamil Nadu with 6,306 and Uttar Pradesh with 6,082. Andhra Pradesh has 4,142 seats, Telangana 3,998, Gujarat 3,862, Rajasthan 3,857 and Madhya Pradesh 3,052. There are 2,384 PG seats in West Bengal and 2,145 PG seats in Kerala. Delhi has 1,660 seats, Bihar 1,470, Odisha 1,419, Haryana 1,129 and Punjab 982.

Maximum seats in MD General Medicine

According to specialty, MD General Medicine has the highest 6,143 seats. This is followed by 5,672 seats in MD Anesthesiology and 5,591 seats in MS General Surgery. These include 4,690 MS in obstetrics and gynecology, 4,203 MD in pediatrics, 3,656 in MS in orthopedics, and 3,343 in MD in pathology. MD radiodiagnosis/radiology included 3,224 people and MS ophthalmology included 2,479 people. Apart from this, 1,596 major posts of MD Psychiatry, 1,832 posts of MD Microbiology and 1,880 posts of MD Dermatology are included.

Super-specialty seats

Matric also provides seats for super-specialty courses. There are 592 seats in DM Cardiology, 440 in MCH Urology, 426 in MCH Neurosurgery and 377 in DM Neurology. In addition, 338 from MCH Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 288 from DM Nephrology and 257 from DM Medical Gastroenterology.

Admission will be given only according to approved seats.

NMC has directed medical colleges to grant admission to PG only on the basis of seats registered in MARB approved and updated seat matrix. Institutions have been asked not to admit students beyond the prescribed capacity. The Commission has also asked counseling committees and other concerned parties to examine the matrix. Instructions are given to report any error, omission or discrepancy to MARB. According to NMC, the seat matrix can be revised if necessary.
