The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) yesterday released a new social science book for class 9, which is the second part of the book prepared for the 9th social science subject. The new book released with the name Understanding Society: India and Beyond Part 2 is prepared in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. These include history, governance, economics, personal finance and entrepreneurship, which are also on the underlying books. Also the conflict between the Mughals and the Sikh Gurus. Along with this, the new book covers many important chapters of history.

Chapter named after 1000 to 1700 AD, mentions the contribution of women rulers

A new 9th social science textbook includes an entire chapter entitled Resistance and Resilience (1000-1700 CE). This chapter covers the events of Indian rulers and communities facing invasion and territorial expansion between 1000 and 1700 AD. It gives examples of war, alliance, diplomacy and cooperation of regional powers.

The chapter also mentions the contribution of women rulers like Rani Nayaki Devi, Rudrama Devi and Rani Abakka Chauta. The book mentions the defeat of Nayaki Devi’s army by Muhammad Ghori at the Battle of Kasarhada in 1178, the reign of the Kakatiya ruler Rudrama Devi and the struggle of Queen Abbakka against the Portuguese powers.

Mention of Maharana Pratap and Jat resistance

The 9th Social Science New Book highlights the Dewyar War of 1582 along with Haldighati in the section related to Maharana Pratap. In the book, the Battle of Dewire is described in terms of Maharana Pratap’s struggle against the Mughal military outposts in Mewar and regaining control over large parts of Mewar. The new book also mentions Jat resistance. A rebellion led by Gokul Jats in 1669 is associated with heavy taxation and exploitation. In addition, another revolt led by the zamindars of Cincinni and Saugar in 1686 is also mentioned.

There is also a chapter on the conflict between the Mughal rulers and the Sikh Gurus.

The conflict between Mughal rule and Sikh Gurus is also discussed in detail in the new 9th social science book. It mentions the events of the era of Guru Arjan Dev, Guru Hargobind, Guru Teg Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh. The book underlines the courage and sacrifice of the Gurus as an important hallmark of Sikhism. The book mentions that from the beginning of the 17th century, due to the growing social and cultural influence of the Sikh Gurus, the Mughal regime increased its intervention in their affairs.

The book tells about Guru Hargobind that Jahangir kept him under house arrest in Gwalior Fort. The book also mentions the establishment of the Akal Takht by Guru Hargobind and the concept of Miri-Piri, which depicts the two aspects of spiritual and worldly power. According to the book, in 1675 Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb ordered the death penalty for Guru Teg Bahadur. The book describes it as an important turning point in Indian history. These events are further linked to the emergence of organized resistance within the Sikh community.

There is also a chapter on the resistance against the Mughals led by the Ahom Empire.

The new 9th social science book also covers the Ahom Empire of Assam and the resistance against the Mughals led by Lachit Barphukan. The book mentions the Saraighat battle of 1671 and explains Ahom strategy, geographical conditions, alliances and the role of the pike system.

The book also mentions religious-cultural aspects related to war and resistance. Also includes a chapter on governance and policy

In the new 9th social science textbook, Governance and Public Policy has been included in place of Authority as proposed earlier. It covers topics like good governance, participation, rule of law, accountability, effectiveness, inclusiveness and transparency. The new book also includes references related to Satyamev Jayate, the Supreme Court’s Yato Dharamasto Jayah and Sengol.

Also Chapter on Income Tax

Chapters on personal finance and income tax have also been added in the new 9th social science book. In which the students have been given information about income tax, tax slab and new tax system. Calculation of tax on various incomes is explained through examples. The book also explains tax as a civic responsibility and states that the revenue from tax is used by the government for public services and development works.

Apart from this, topics like savings, insurance, financial planning and Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY are also included in the book. It aims to give students a basic understanding of everyday financial decisions and personal finance.

Students will read the case study of Lijjat Papad

In the new 9th social science textbook, women’s home industry Lijjat Papad has been included as a case study in the chapter on entrepreneurship. The book recounts its beginnings in 1959 by seven women with an initial capital of Rs. is 80. Along with this, hotelier Mohan Singh Oberoi and the business network of the Chettiar community in Tamil Nadu have also been cited as examples.

The book also links topics like India’s startup economy, Vikhit Bharat 2047, Self-reliant India, unicorns, e-commerce, fintech, healthcare and agritech to entrepreneurship. Contributions of business such as employment creation, production of goods and services, tax payment, innovation, improvement in living standards and CSR are also mentioned.
