Samples of the country’s leading FMCG company Nestlé India’s low-fat dairy whitener did not meet the prescribed standards in a food safety test conducted at a government laboratory. After quality testing of samples taken under the guidelines of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) found deviations from statutory parameters, the regulatory body has initiated the process of necessary legislative and administrative action in this regard. Let us also tell you what the whole matter is…
Nestlé India’s sample failed
A sample of Nestlé India’s low-fat dairy whitener taken from ‘The Lalit’ hotel in New Delhi has failed the food safety test. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has described it as “unsafe” and “poor quality”. The samples were sent to the lab for testing. The report of the food analyst has revealed that the product is not in accordance with the rules of the ‘Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006’.
However, Nestlé India maintains that its low-fat dairy whitener is safe for consumption and complies with all necessary regulations. The company says that phosphorus is a nutrient that occurs naturally in milk and is therefore present in all milk products.
Nestlé India said in a statement that FSSAI’s lab report found total phosphorus above the additive limit, while the presence of large amounts of natural phosphorus in milk products was not taken into account. The company said that our product fully complies with the regulations for added phosphorus as per the limits set under the FSSR, including the conditions at the time of use.
raised questions
After the failure of the test report, the relevant food safety authorities have issued a notice to the company seeking clarification and the sale and distribution of the affected lot/batch is being reviewed. Consumer Safety and Brand Trust: The failure of samples of a widely used dairy whitener for tea and coffee in households and commercial establishments has once again raised questions about the quality of packaged milk products and FMCG safety protocols. For Nestlé India, which has a strong hold in India’s processed food and dairy portfolio, the development is seen as sensitive in terms of brand image and consumer sentiment, with stock market investors watching the company’s reaction.
