The number of small hybrid cars in the Indian car market may increase rapidly in the next 18-24 months. Many companies including Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Toyota and Renault are gearing up to launch affordable hybrid models. These cars can be launched especially in the sub 4 meter car segment.

Maruti’s small car will get a hybrid system

Maruti is developing an economical hybrid system, which the company may use in its small cars. According to media reports, models like Fronx, Baleno, Swift and Brezza could use this technology. The first of these hybrid models could hit the market next year i.e. 2027.

Hyundai and Toyota will also launch hybrid cars

Hyundai is also preparing a small hybrid car for India. It is expected to launch in mid-2027. At the same time, Toyota’s Indian unit is gearing up to launch a hybrid version of the urban cruiser Taser. This model may be launched after the hybrid version of Maruti Franks. Renault is also involved in this race. The company is working on a new sub-4 meter urban SUV, which is being linked to the ‘Bridger’ concept. It is expected to get a hybrid powertrain and could be launched by the end of next year.

Hybrid cars are expensive now

Companies like Maruti Suzuki, Honda, Kia and Toyota are selling hybrid cars in India, but these models usually cost more than Rs 16 lakh. In addition, most of the existing hybrid models are larger than 4 meters, due to which they attract higher taxes. This picture may change with the advent of small hybrid cars. After the change in the GST system in September 2025, the tax on small hybrid cars has come down to 18 percent. This has made it easier for companies to make low-cost hybrid cars and for consumers to buy them than ever before.

The biggest advantage of a hybrid car

The biggest advantage of a hybrid car is that it uses both an electric motor and a petrol engine. Because of this, the customer does not have to worry about running out of charging like with an electric car. Also, you can get better mileage compared to a petrol car. CAFE-3 regulations are also a major reason for the promotion of hybrid cars. The third phase of these new rules related to fuel efficiency will come into effect from April 1, 2027. Under this, cars adopting more fuel-efficient technologies will help meet the companies’ average fuel efficiency targets.
