The Nobel Prize in Economics has been announced. Economy Award for the year 2026 American economists Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford have met. Both have received this honor for their models for explaining the causes of inflation and recessions and for creating policies to combat them. His research explains why it is difficult to stop inflation around the world and why people lose their jobs or become less employed when a country has a recession and the economy weakens.
E. The mechanism for macroeconomic stabilization given by Hall and Woodford explains how the spending and decisions of firms in a country affect the economy. Also when there is a time of crisis in the country. It also explains what steps banks and governments should take in the event of an economic crisis.
Why is inflation difficult to control?
When inflation rises there are many reasons behind it. The decisions of companies and their thinking about the future also affect prices. If companies think that the price of raw materials, energy and other commodities will rise in the future, they pre-price their products. At the same time, even after the market demand decreases, companies do not immediately reduce prices, because it takes time and money to change prices frequently. Economist Michael Woodford’s model helps to understand how the decisions of firms and their future expectations affect inflation. With this, central banks can assess what effect changes in interest rates will have on prices.
Why do jobs tend to decline in economic recessions?
Another major area of research for both economists is analyzing the state of jobs during recessions. During an economic recession, people start cutting back on their spending, which leads to a decrease in the demand for goods and services in the market. This affects the business of companies and they may reduce production and even stop hiring. Many times employees have to be laid off.
Economist John Maynard Keynes said that when demand falls, the government can support the economy by increasing spending. It can increase trade and employment. At the same time, Robert Hall’s research helped to understand that households decide their spending by considering their future income along with their current income. If people feel that their income may decrease in the future, they reduce their spending from now on. When large numbers of households do this, demand across the economy can weaken.
Why is the Nobel Prize in Economics different from other awards?
The Nobel Prize in Economics was not part of Alfred Nobel’s original will. It was launched in 1968 by the Central Bank of Sweden. Its official name is the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel. This honor is given for research that makes a significant contribution to understanding the economy and making decisions related to it. The award also considers the usefulness of research and its impact on economic thinking. This is the reason why this economics prize, though different from the original Nobel Prizes, is one of the most prestigious academic honors in the world.
What are the causes of inflation?
Whenever inflation rises at the global level, it affects all the countries of the world. Some countries are more affected by it and others are less affected by it. For example, if we consider the current global conflicts, it is understandable how the Russia-Ukraine war and the subsequent war between Iran, America and Israel have shaken the global economy. Crude oil prices crossed $120 per barrel, which led to an increase in oil prices across the world, including in India, and also affected inflation.
There are 5 main reasons for rising inflation
- Demand Generation: When demand for goods and services increases in the market, but supply does not, prices tend to rise.
- Increase in cost of production: Companies can make their products more expensive if the cost of raw materials, electricity, fuel, wages and transportation increases.
- Shortage in Supply: Availability of goods may decrease due to drought, flood, war or supply chain disruption. This may increase the prices of food items and fuel in particular.
- Decisions of companies and future expectations: Companies can increase prices in advance if they feel that costs will increase further. Often times, despite a drop in demand, prices don’t drop immediately.
- Imports becoming expensive: If the dollar strengthens against the rupee, crude oil and other goods from abroad may become more expensive for India. Due to this, prices may increase in the local market as well.
