Swiggy’s co-founder Sriharsh Majeti made his mark in the food delivery business. He studied from prestigious institutes like BITS Pilani and IIM Calcutta and also worked in investment banking in London. Despite this, instead of being confined to a job, he decided to start his own business. Learning from the initial challenges, he launched Swiggy in 2014. Let’s know the complete story of his studies, career and becoming an entrepreneur.

where were you born

Sriharsha Majeti was born in Andhra Pradesh. According to media reports, his father ran a restaurant, while his mother was involved in the medical sector. This way he got an opportunity to understand the business and food industry closely from the beginning.

Got two degrees from BITS Pilani

Sriharsh took admission in Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani in the year 2003. In the year 2008, he obtained a BE degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and an MSc degree in Physics. During his studies, he was also a coordinator in the photography department of the institute.

After this he prepared for the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and cleared the Level-2 examination. However, he later decided to move into business instead of working in finance.

Study from IIM Calcutta and work in London

Between 2009 and 2011, Sriharsh pursued a Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) in Finance from IIM Calcutta. Here he also handled the responsibilities related to student placements and internships. After this he worked at Nomura International in London. Here he gained experience in investment banking and trading, but in August 2012 he quit and started preparing to start something on his own.

The six-month journey gave a new direction

After quitting his job, Sriharsh toured Europe and Asia on a shoestring budget for about six months. During this time he cycled around 3,500 kilometers from Portugal to Greece. The trip gave him time to think about his future and business ideas.

A journey from bundle to swiggy

Returning to India, he started a courier service aggregator called Bundle in 2013. However, due to challenges related to logistics and technical facilities, they had to change their business model. In the year 2014, Sriharsh Majethi started Swiggy along with Nandan Reddy. The company focused on making it easier to deliver food from restaurants to customers.

Swiggy isn’t just limited to food delivery

Over time Swiggy expanded its services. Now features such as ordering daily items through Instamart, booking a restaurant table through Dineout and sending goods through Genie are also available on its platform. The company also offers a membership service called Swiggy One.
