What is the UN Young Professionals Programme?
The Young Professionals Program is part of the United Nations recruitment process. Its aim is to give talented youth from different countries an opportunity to work in the United Nations Secretariat. Candidates have to go through exam and other prescribed stages for selection in this. In the year 2026, issues related to development and sustainable development are being addressed.
What will you get if selected?
Candidates who successfully complete the selection process are included in the valid roster for three years. However, being named in the roster does not mean that the job is guaranteed. Candidates are considered when there is a vacancy in the relevant post in the United Nations Secretariat. On appointment, an initial fixed-term contract of two years may be offered. If the work is satisfactory there may be an opportunity for a permanent contract.
Where can the appointment be made?
Under this programme, appointments can be made to P-1 and P-2 level posts. Candidates may have the opportunity to work in New York, Geneva, Nairobi, Bangkok, Vienna and other international centers. Can also be deployed in field operations as required.
From which topics will questions be asked?
The exam may include questions related to economics, statistics, social subjects, environment and sustainable development. Apart from this, understanding of data science, digital transformation, technology and program management is also important. These topics are useful in work related to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
What should be the educational qualification?
A minimum three-year bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject is required to apply. Candidates studying Economics, Environment, Statistics, Data Science and Social Sciences can apply. Candidates with higher degree can also apply as per eligibility.
Be careful while applying
Candidates have to select the appropriate category related to their studies on the Inspira portal. Options include subjects such as business, computing, environment, law, mathematics, statistics and social sciences. If the name of the degree is not found in the list, select the most similar option and enter the actual name of the degree in English or French in Additional Details. Avoid selecting the ‘Other’ option in the form, as it may result in cancellation of the application. Before applying, please check the eligibility and last date in the official notification.
