Controversy continues over election results in Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party accused Arab parties of stealing votes in the election. The party also claimed that these parties took money from Qatar to buy votes. However, Netanyahu’s party has not provided any evidence to support its allegations. Qatar also rejected these allegations. He called it an attempt to spread misinformation.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Israel’s Election Commission released a statement on the election results. Noam Solberg, the head of the commission, said that even if allegations of foreign interference in the election were proven true, the results of the election would not change. This will not raise questions on the credibility of the entire electoral process. Solberg said this in a video. Meanwhile, the head of Israel’s internal security agency Shin Bet and the Attorney General were also present with him.
Two people arrested for buying votes were released
Israeli police released two of the three political activists on Sunday. These people were arrested before the start of voting on Tuesday. According to the police, these people were walking around with envelopes full of cash. He was accused of buying votes by giving money.
One of those released has been released with some conditions. Others have been ordered to stay at home. Police said these people belonged to the Arab-led party Ram. This party has won 8 seats in the elections. Party chief Mansoor Abbas has condemned the arrest. He called it undemocratic. He says that this is an attempt to influence the results of the election.
Netanyahu accused of defaming election results
Opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot on Sunday accused Netanyahu of running an organized campaign to discredit the election results. Eisenkot has previously refused to form a government with Arab parties. But no coalition got majority this time. In such a situation he can form a government with the support of Arab parties.
In the November 27 election, Netanyahu’s coalition won 53 seats, while the opposition coalition led by Eisenkot won 48 seats. Israel’s parliament has a total of 120 seats. 61 seats are required to form the government. At the same time, the three Arab-led parties combined won a record 19 seats. If these parties come together with Eisenkot, their coalition could get 67 seats. However, the idea of forming a government in Israel with Arab parties is not acceptable to many people.
The election results are to be officially certified on November 4. After this, President Isaac Herzog will invite a candidate to form a new government. There is time till November 11 to form a new government.
