IDBI Bank Strike:If you are planning to leave home today or tomorrow to complete some important work related to the bank, wait a little longer. Employees of IDBI Bank, one of the largest banks in the country, have started a two-day nationwide strike from today i.e. November 2. More than 10,000 bank officials and employees from across the country are participating in the strike, which is scheduled to take place on November 2 and 3. With such a large number of employees shutting down, bank branches can be eerily quiet. This will directly affect the common customers who have to go to the branch for their work. Looking at the situation, the bank management had already issued an advisory to its customers two days ago.
Employees handing over the Bank of Canada company were outraged
The real reason behind this massive strike is the central government’s privatization plan. The strike has been announced by the ‘United Forum of IDBI Officers and Employees’, an organization representing the bank’s officers and employees. Indeed, the government is preparing to hand over the reins of IDBI Bank to Canada’s Fairfax Group. The employee unions have taken to the streets against this proposal. The Union has directly demanded the central government and the bank management to withdraw the privatization process immediately. Employees have also raised questions on the method of determining the valuation of the bank. He says there is a huge lack of transparency in the process of selling the bank.
Recovering from loss Rs. 30,100 crore profit, then why sell?
There is also anger among employees as to why the bank is being sold when it is earning well. According to the union, when the RBI conducted its asset quality review between 2016 and 2020, a large number of bad loans, or NPAs, were declared in banks. The bank incurred huge losses during this period. Then, to save the bank from sinking, the government and Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) stepped in and provided capital of over Rs 46,000 crore.
The union says that in those bad times it was not a private investor but government, LIC and bank employees who worked day and night to maintain customer confidence. As a result of this hard work, in the last six years the bank has made a total of Rs. Earned a net profit of over 30,100 crores. If we look at the figures, in the year 2018, the gross NPA of the bank was at an alarming level of 31.78%, which has now come down to just 2.30%. As of date, the bank’s net NPA is 0.16%, capital adequacy ratio is 26.38% and provision coverage ratio is 99.31%. Employees are clear that it makes no sense to take the bank into private hands when its financial position is so strong.

What will be the impact on consumers’ pockets and facilities?
Due to this two-day strike, the operations in the bank branches may be directly affected. However, the extent of the impact will depend on the number of employees participating in the strike there. If you go to the branch to deposit a cheque, submit KYC documents or resolve any account related issue, you may face problems. It is a relief that digital services will continue in full.
IDBI Bank has informed its official that the bank has also made a big announcement for the convenience of the customers. During these two days, IDBI customers will not be charged any extra if they withdraw cash from any other bank’s ATM. However, the availability of cash in ATMs of different areas may vary. Therefore, the bank has advised customers to withdraw money in advance when they need cash and keep their mobile and internet banking active.
