US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Washington. Issues such as trade, growing strategic competition between Taiwan, the US and China and artificial intelligence were discussed at the meeting. Let’s know 5 big things related to meeting…
1. Trade agreement extended for two more months
The US and China have agreed to extend a deal to end the trade war between the two countries for two more months. The agreement signed last year was supposed to expire in November. According to US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant, this will give both countries more time to discuss economic issues.
However, issues such as tariffs, Chinese purchases, supply of rare minerals and technology restrictions are yet to be fully resolved. According to the US, China has met the requirement to buy 25 million tons of soybeans, but purchases of other agricultural products worth about $17 billion still lag behind. The US also said that supply of rare earths from China has been below the stipulated level.
2. Trump changed the style of the White House for Xi Jinping
Trump used Xi’s visit as an opportunity to show off the White House in style. During his visit to China, Xi Jinping welcomed Trump by taking him to a temple and a special Ming Dynasty garden. In response, the soldiers in Washington wore the uniforms of the old American era. The Rose Garden was shaped like Trump’s golf club. Fighter planes and bombers also flew overhead. The noise of the plane was so loud that even Trump was startled for a moment.
3. JINPING’S APPEAL ON TAIWAN
Xi Jinping asked Trump to proceed with caution on the Taiwan issue. According to China’s state news agency, Jinping wants the US to oppose Taiwan independence. This is different from the American language so far. The US has generally said it does not support Taiwan independence. There is currently no sign of the Trump administration changing its language.
4. Also discuss the threat of war
Xi Jinping linked the growing competition between the US and China to a Thucydides trap. This is the view that conflict between emerging and existing great powers can increase the risk of war. Xi Jinping said that this threat can be avoided. He spoke of regular military talks between the two countries and strengthening of crisis management systems. Trump also referred to old wartime cooperation and said the two countries can work together on common interests.
5. Both countries have different views on AI
The two leaders also differed in their views on AI. Trump talked about calling AI a superintelligence, or SI, and said he wanted to trust the Justice Department rather than adding new rules to the current system. Xi Jinping said that America and China are leading countries in the world in the field of AI. Therefore, both should drive the development of AI in a controlled manner. He said that AI should be used for the benefit of people and its development should be under human control.
