The trend of buying two-wheelers in India is strong. The special thing is that now the role of rural areas in this market is getting bigger. In the first half of calendar year 2026 i.e. between January and June, rural areas accounted for 55 per cent of the total two-wheeler registrations in the country.
According to a study by Jato Dynamics, during this period, 32 per cent of two-wheeler registrations were from urban areas and 13 per cent from metro cities. These figures include motorcycles, scooters and electric two-wheelers. Rural India has long been an important market for two-wheeler companies. The figures for the first six months of 2026 also show that the demand for two-wheelers in villages is strong. Demand for motorcycles in particular was highest, while sales of scooters also remained strong.
Motorcycles are most in demand in villages
Motorcycles are still the first choice for two-wheeler buyers in rural areas. Between January and June 2026, motorcycles accounted for 68.3 percent of total two-wheeler registrations in rural areas.
The motorcycle segment was also dominated by low cost and daily use bikes. Entry-level and commuter motorcycles falling between 100cc and 125cc account for about 75 percent of rural motorcycle registrations. The main reason for this is that bikes in this category generally sit closer to the needs of rural customers in terms of mileage, price and daily usage.
The demand for scooters also remains unchanged
Not only motorcycles but also scooters are in demand in villages. Scooters accounted for about 24 percent of rural two-wheeler registrations. As for the scooter segment, the demand for 90-110cc and 125cc models was almost equal. This means that even for scooters in the rural market, customer choice is not limited to just one engine range.
The traction of electric two-wheelers is still small, but growing
Rural India is still strongly dominated by petrol two-wheelers, but the entry of electric two-wheelers is also gradually increasing. Talking about EV registrations, TVS Motor Company and Bajaj Auto have together achieved a 56 percent share in rural electric two-wheeler registrations. This shows that both these companies have a good presence in the rural EV market. In terms of fuel type, petrol vehicles accounted for 94 per cent of two-wheeler registrations in rural areas, while electric two-wheelers accounted for 5.9 per cent.
In comparison, petrol two-wheelers accounted for around 89 percent of the urban market and electric vehicles accounted for 10.7 percent. At the same time, the share of EVs in metro cities has reached 10.9 percent. That is, electric two-wheeler penetration is still low in rural areas compared to cities, but even here EV presence is gradually increasing.
100-110cc bikes dominate in Rajasthan
The picture of the rural two-wheeler market also varies from state to state. Consumer reliance on 100-110cc motorcycles was very high in Rajasthan. Here, the share of this category in the total two-wheeler registration has reached 74 percent.
At the same time, demand for commuter motorcycles also remained strong in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. In these states, bikes for daily use and good mileage are preferred especially among rural customers.
The rural market took over the two-wheeler market
Overall, rural India is an important growth engine for the two-wheeler market in the first half of 2026. With a share of 55 per cent of the total registrations, villages have shown that the demand for two-wheelers is not limited to the big cities.
100-125cc commuter motorcycles have a strong hold among rural consumers. At the same time, scooters and electric two-wheelers are also slowly making their way. The future picture of the two-wheeler market will largely depend on how much EV penetration in rural areas increases in the coming time.
