It happens once in many years, when banks are found open on Sundays. Sunday 27 September is one such day. Public sector banks and regional rural banks (RRBs) will remain open on Sunday i.e. September 27, following RBI’s notification, ahead of the three-day bank strike. On September 27, RBI allowed opening of bank branches, offices, ATMs and currency chests. The arrangement is intended to give customers an extra day to complete important banking work before the strike.
Are all banks open on Sunday, September 27th?
As per RBI notification, public sector banks and regional rural banks will remain open on Sundays. Private banks are likely to remain closed today as they are not participating in the strike. However, private bank customers should contact their bank branch to know about today’s holiday status or wait for its update.
SBI, the country’s largest state-owned bank, posted on Facebook asking, Do you have any banking work this Sunday? We are open to you! All branches of SBI will remain open on Sunday, 27 September 2026 to provide essential banking services for your convenience. Visit your nearest SBI branch and fulfill your banking needs. We are always ready…
Why do public sector banks open on Sundays?
This decision has been taken because the proposed bank strike will last for three consecutive days from September 28 to September 30. Saturday was a holiday and if Sunday was also a holiday, banks would be closed for five days. Keeping branches open on September 27 has given customers an opportunity to complete transactions that require a branch visit.
Bank officers’ association protested
The decision to make September 27 a working day has not been liked by all bank employee associations. In a statement on September 23, the All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA) advised its members not to report to work on Sunday, September 27. The association says the day is a holiday under the Industrial Disputes Act. AIBOA has also said that its members will join the proposed ‘stay-out’ strike from September 28 to September 30.
