Monday morning brought great relief for millions of bank customers across the country. A proposed three-day nationwide bank strike from September 28 to 30 has been postponed at the last moment. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) gave this information by issuing an official statement on Sunday, September 27. The strike, which coincided with the closing of half-years, threatened to bring banking operations to a complete standstill. During this period, along with the general public, business transactions may also stall badly. But a major development late on Sunday changed the entire picture.
How did the tables turn on the night?
At 9:30 pm on Sunday, the Indian Banks Association (IBA) team held a very important meeting with the representatives of UFBU. All the old demands of the long pending bank unions were discussed at length in this tense meeting. The main demand among these was to implement a five-day banking week. During the meeting, IBA gave a clear assurance to the union to take positive action on all their legitimate demands. After this assurance, the union took the final decision to withdraw its proposed three-day strike.
What decision was made on Saturday holiday?
Bank employees have long been continuously demanding that they be allowed to work only five days a week. Under the current system, banks are closed only on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. Bank unions are demanding that all Saturdays be declared public holidays. After the talks held on Sunday night, it has now been decided that a high-level committee will be formed on this serious issue.
The committee will consist of representatives of IBA as well as members of UFBU. This special committee will carefully consider all possible options for giving the rest of Saturday a holiday. Along with this, after discussion with all the stakeholders, a solution will be worked out which will give relief to the bank employees and also the customers will not have to face any problem. This demand was also a major part of the March 2024 pay agreement, on which concrete initiatives are now being taken.
Other demands related to PLI scheme
The issue of the Saturday holiday was not the only reason behind the postponement of the strike. The Union also had some serious concerns regarding the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Bank Officers in Scale IV and above. According to a statement from UFBU, the way to communicate with IBA on the subject is now completely cleared. The union wants all their concerns regarding the PLI scheme to be addressed before sending any fresh proposal to the central government. Besides, it is hoped that solutions will be found soon on other outstanding issues included in the discussion held on March 8, 2024. Both parties will work to resolve these outstanding matters as soon as possible.
Big relief to customers
As the strike is now completely averted, all banks will be open as normal on Monday, September 28. There are fears of major disruption in banking services due to the strike. As reported by news agency ANI, many bank branches were opened in the country on Sunday as well. Its main objective was to ensure that important work of customers could be completed before the strike began. But now there is no threat of a three-day nationwide strike. Now the entire focus of the Union will be on the upcoming meetings of the High Level Committee.
