When was UPSC established?
The first Public Service Commission in India was established on 1 October 1926 during the British rule, which later evolved into the Union Public Service Commission i.e. UPSC. Over the past 100 years, the country has achieved many important milestones related to independence, economic development and social change. The role of UPSC has also been important in this entire development journey. The officers selected by the commission have made significant contributions in implementing policies, strengthening administration and accelerating the development of the country.
The commission conducts recruitment examinations for various services and posts of the central government. UPSC organized several events from 1 October 2025 to 1 October 2026 to mark the completion of 100 years of its establishment. A closing ceremony of the centenary year is planned on October 1.

UPSC data shows that the participation of women in the civil services is steadily increasing. A total of 83 candidates were recommended for appointment in the year 1952. The share increased even in a decade
According to the government, about a decade ago the participation of women among the successful candidates in the civil services examination was about 20 per cent. Now this figure has reached above 30 percent. A woman was also included among the top five successful candidates in CSE 2025.
