New CEO of HDFC Bank: The ongoing speculation about the leadership of HDFC Bank, India’s largest private sector bank, has come to an end. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given final approval for the appointment of Anoop Bagchi as the bank’s new Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The bank had shared official information about the major change in its filing with the stock exchange on October 1. His name has been given green light under Section 35B of Banking Regulation Act 1949.

Will take charge from 27th October

Anup Bagchi will fully take over the bank from 27 October 2026. He was currently serving as the MD and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance. The current MD and CEO of the bank, Shashidhar Jagadishan, is ending his tenure on October 26. Jagdeesan did not seek re-appointment for his next term. For this reason the bank was looking for a new and experienced leader. Bagchi has also been appointed as an additional director of the bank with effect from October 2, pending shareholders’ approval.

The race for the top job involved veterans

There was a cut-throat competition for this top position in the bank. According to media reports, the bank had proposed two names to the Reserve Bank for the top post. The first name in this was Anoop Bagchi. Another name was that of HDFC Bank’s current Deputy MD Kayzad Bharucha. Both are big names in the banking sector. Finally his name was finalized considering his long experience as a horticulturist. It now faces the challenge of further strengthening the bank’s vast network.

Shares rose ahead of the announcement

The market probably felt this big change. Even before the official announcement of Anoop Bagchi’s name, HDFC Bank shares saw a positive movement. On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the bank’s shares surged 1.76 percent to Rs. closed at 721.20. Investors have taken this change in leadership positively. With the new management, the stock market will now be closely watching the bank’s future strategy.

Other major changes in the banking sector

October 1 turned out to be a turbulent day for the country’s private banking sector. Apart from HDFC Bank, another major Kotak Mahindra Bank has also seen major changes at the top level. Kotak Mahindra Bank on the same day appointed Anup Kumar Saha as its new MD and CEO. In this way two of the largest private banks of the country have got their new bosses in a single day.
