Smit Machchhar: An Indian pilot has come into the spotlight after a serious mid-air incident involving a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Captain Smit Machchhar was injured during an altercation with his co-pilot but remained involved in efforts to bring the aircraft to safety.

The incident took place on Flydubai Flight FZ1073 on September 30, 2026. The Boeing 737 was carrying around 174 passengers, most of them Israeli, when the situation inside the cockpit suddenly turned critical.

Who Is Captain Smit Machchhar?

Captain Smit Machchhar is an Indian commercial pilot from Gujarat who has extensive experience flying Boeing 737 aircraft. He joined Flydubai in 2022 after spending more than a decade with SpiceJet.

According to details reported from his professional profile, Machchhar has more than 9,750 hours of flying experience. During his earlier career at SpiceJet, he also worked as a Line Training Captain and was involved in pilot training and operational standards.

What Happened on the Flydubai Flight?

The flight was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when an altercation reportedly broke out between the captain and the Omani co-pilot. The co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar with a knife and attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s systems.

The aircraft then went into a rapid descent. Reuters reported that the plane dropped nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds before the situation was brought under control.

Despite being seriously injured, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door. Passengers and crew members then entered the cockpit and helped restrain the co-pilot. Two off-duty pilots who were travelling on the aircraft also assisted in getting the plane under control.

Emergency Landing in Saudi Arabia

The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it made an emergency landing. The injured captain and co-pilot were taken to hospital for medical treatment after the aircraft landed safely.

Reports said all passengers survived the incident. The episode is now being investigated by authorities, while the motive behind the co-pilot’s actions remains under investigation.

Netanyahu Praises Those Who Helped

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly praised the passengers and crew members who intervened during the incident. He said their quick response helped prevent a potentially serious disaster and acknowledged the people who helped regain control of the situation.

The incident has also drawn attention to Captain Machchhar’s aviation career and his experience as a Boeing 737 pilot. SpiceJet, his former employer, later expressed pride in his actions during the emergency.

The investigation is expected to establish exactly how the cockpit confrontation unfolded and what led to the co-pilot’s actions. Authorities are also examining the wider aviation-security implications of the incident.
