Petrol diesel price today: Fuel prices remain an important concern for motorists as crude oil prices continue to move amid changing global supply conditions. On October 2, petrol and diesel rates in major Indian cities remained largely unchanged.

At the same time, there is growing discussion about whether domestic fuel prices could ease in the coming days. Changes in crude oil sourcing and international oil prices could influence the cost of petrol and diesel in the domestic market.

Petrol Diesel Price Today in Major Cities

According to the latest rates reported on October 2, petrol in Mumbai is priced at Rs 111.21 per litre, while diesel costs Rs 97.83 per litre.

In Delhi, petrol is available at Rs 102.12 per litre and diesel at Rs 95.20 per litre. Chennai has petrol at Rs 107.76 per litre and diesel at Rs 99.55 per litre.

In Kolkata, motorists are paying Rs 113.51 per litre for petrol, while diesel is priced at Rs 99.82 per litre.

CityPetrolDiesel
Mumbai₹111.21/litre₹97.83/litre
Delhi₹102.12/litre₹95.20/litre
Chennai₹107.76/litre₹99.55/litre
Kolkata₹113.51/litre₹99.82/litre

Fuel prices vary from state to state because local taxes, including VAT, are different. Petrol and diesel are also outside the GST framework, with central duties and state-level taxes forming part of the retail price.

Why Could Petrol and Diesel Become Cheaper?

One factor being closely watched is India’s crude oil sourcing strategy. The source report says Indian oil companies have been purchasing crude from Iraq on a free-on-board basis and arranging shipments using chartered vessels.

The change in sourcing could help companies manage crude procurement costs, although the eventual impact on retail fuel prices will depend on global crude prices, import costs, taxes and oil marketing company decisions.

There is also significant volatility in international oil markets. On October 2, Brent crude was around $101 per barrel, while WTI crude was around $92 per barrel, according to the report.

However, global prices remain sensitive to geopolitical developments and supply disruptions. Reuters reported on October 2 that Brent crude was trading around $102.60 per barrel, highlighting continued uncertainty in the international oil market.

Fuel Prices Have Remained Under Pressure

India’s domestic fuel market is currently facing pressure from elevated international crude prices. Reuters reported that retail petrol and diesel prices had not been adjusted since May 2026 despite the rise in global oil prices.

The government has also been monitoring fuel availability after some private retailers restricted sales at certain outlets. On October 1, the Oil Secretary said such restrictions were not acceptable and that private fuel retailers would be asked to end sales rationing.

How to Check Petrol and Diesel Rates by SMS

Consumers can check the latest fuel rates without visiting a petrol pump. Indian Oil customers can send an SMS with RSP followed by their location code to 9224992249.

BPCL customers can also check fuel prices by sending RSP to 9223112222. The latest applicable rate is then provided through SMS.

For motorists, checking the rate before refuelling can be useful, particularly when fuel prices are changing across markets.

The petrol diesel price today remains dependent on several factors, including international crude prices, currency movements, taxes, transportation costs and the pricing decisions of oil marketing companies. Any reduction in retail rates will depend on how these factors develop in the coming days.
