The proposed trade agreement between India and the US has been in talks for several months. A final agreement on these talks is still awaited and the wait could be longer. This information was provided by the US on September 1. The US representative said that negotiations on a trade deal with India are still ongoing and are not expected to be finalized immediately.

However, both sides are in talks to resolve important differences. US Trade Representative Jameson Greer said Washington is working to finalize a bilateral trade agreement with India. He said he had a “very positive conversation” with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal during the G20 trade ministers’ meeting in Milwaukee this week.

‘Identified issues on which consensus could not be reached’

Greer said, “I don’t think a decision will be made immediately, but we have identified issues on which there is no consensus. We are working diligently to resolve them.” According to official sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump spoke on phone on Wednesday. India-US also agreed to maintain close contacts to strengthen strategic partnership. The Prime Minister’s Office said the two leaders reviewed cooperation in the areas of trade, defence, energy and critical technologies.

The leaders said they would further strengthen the friendship between India and the US and continue to work together. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is in America from September 29 to October 5. He has gone on to discuss trade agreements and tentative agreements between the two countries. There is still disagreement on some key issues.

India and the US have been talking about a trade deal for several months, but no final decision has been taken yet. During this visit, Piyush Goyal met American business leaders and officials. He also spoke to people from manufacturing and technology companies. The main differences in the negotiations are related to market access and tariffs. India has also expressed concern over the new US tariffs related to buying Russian oil.
