Banks will remain closed on several days in October 2026 due to national holidays, festivals, Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar includes different holidays for different states, so the number of closures can vary depending on location.

October is packed with major festivals, including Dussehra and Durga Puja. For customers planning branch visits, checking the holiday applicable to their state is important before heading to the bank.

Bank Holiday List for October 2026

The month begins with a nationwide bank holiday on October 2, marking Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. Banks will also remain closed on October 4 because it is Sunday.

On October 10, banks will observe the second Saturday holiday across the country. In Karnataka and Kolkata, the day also coincides with Mahalaya Amavasya. October 11 will be another nationwide closure because of Sunday.

Regional holidays begin again on October 17, when banks in Tripura will remain closed for Maha Saptami. October 18 is Sunday, so bank branches across the country will remain shut.

Dussehra and Durga Puja Holidays

Several states will observe bank holidays between October 19 and October 23 because of Dussehra, Durga Puja, Vijayadashami and related celebrations.

On October 19, bank branches in several states, including West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand and parts of the Northeast, will remain closed for regional festivals.

October 20 is one of the major holiday dates in the month, with bank closures reported across a large number of states for Dussehra, Vijayadashami, Ayudha Puja and Durga Puja. The exact holiday varies by state.

Banks in states such as Tripura, Karnataka, Sikkim, Assam, Kerala and West Bengal will observe a holiday on October 21 for Vijayadashami or Durga Puja. Sikkim will also have bank holidays on October 22 and October 23 for Durga Puja celebrations.

Fourth Saturday and Other Regional Holidays

October 24 will be a bank holiday across India as it falls on the fourth Saturday. The following day, October 25, is Sunday and banks will remain closed nationwide.

On October 26, banks in Tripura, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh will observe regional holidays linked to Lakshmi Puja, Accession Day or Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti.

Further regional closures are scheduled for October 29 in Himachal Pradesh for Karwa Chauth and October 31 in Gujarat for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Jayanti.

Digital Banking Services Will Continue

A bank holiday does not mean customers lose access to digital banking services. Internet banking, mobile banking applications and UPI generally remain available, allowing customers to make payments, transfer money and manage many routine banking services without visiting a branch.

However, services that specifically require a physical branch visit may have to wait until the next working day.

Customers should therefore check the holiday applicable to their state and plan important branch-related work accordingly.
