People’s interest in electric cars is increasing rapidly in India. In September 2026, sales of electric passenger vehicles in the country increased by nearly 94 percent compared to last year. According to vehicle data, about 35,995 electric passenger vehicles were registered in September. While in September 2025 this number was 18,520 units.

These statistics show that now more people are considering buying electric cars in addition to petrol and diesel cars. Electric cars accounted for about 8.3 percent of the total passenger vehicle registrations in the country in September. In simple language, about one out of every 12 passenger vehicles was an electric vehicle.

Tata Motors has the highest EV sales

Tata Motors topped electric car sales in September. The company sold 14,769 electric passenger vehicles. Along with this, the market share of the company was around 41 percent. Tata Motors sold 7,353 electric vehicles in September last year. That means the company’s EV sales have increased by about 101 percent in a year.

Mahindra & Mahindra is second. The company sold 7,779 electric vehicles in September. In September 2025, this figure was 3,972 units. That means the company’s sales have increased by about 96 percent. JSW MG Motor India is third with sales of 5,242 units.

With the new models, the options of the customers are increasing

The main reason for the increase in EV sales is the arrival of new electric models in the market. While earlier there were few options for electric cars, now different companies are bringing new models. With this, customers have more options to choose a car according to their needs and budget.

Concerns about petrol and diesel prices are also driving some people to electric cars. Winfast sold 2,963 electric cars in September. Kia sold 1,263 units, up 111 percent from last year. While Maruti Suzuki recorded sales of 1,103 units with its electric model.

Big increase in EV sales even in six months

Electric car sales did not increase only in the month of September. Around 1.91 lakh electric passenger vehicles were sold in the country between April and September 2026. Around 1.02 lakh units were sold in the same period last year. That means the sales have increased by about 89 percent in six months.

September sales were also higher than August 2026’s 32,433 units. However, the share of EVs in the total car market is still much lower than that of petrol, diesel, CNG and hybrid cars. In that case, sales in the coming months will tell whether this rapid pace of electric cars continues in the future.

The Bullet-Hunter continued to shine, with sales touching 1.34 lakh in September
