If you are thinking of buying an electric car from Tata, there is good news for you. Tata Motors has launched a battery-as-a-service i.e. BaaS model for its entire EV range. Earlier this feature was limited to select models like Tiago EV and Punch EV, but now the company has extended it to its premium electric cars as well.

This means that the Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV and even the flagship Harrier EV can now be bought with the BaaS model. In this model, when buying a car, the full cost of the battery does not need to be paid at once, which significantly reduces the initial cost of the EV. The starting price of the Tata EV with BaaS has gone up to Rs 4.69 lakh.

Car and battery prices will vary

In the BaaS model, the cost of the car and the battery are separated. Instead of paying the full cost of the car and battery together, the customer has to finance both separately. Tata offers it as a dual-loan finance product, subject to financier approval and certain terms and conditions.

The customer has to pay separately for the battery for a fixed period. Its monthly installment can be determined based on things like battery capacity, down payment and loan tenure. This means that in models with larger batteries, battery-related payments may also be higher.

Battery usage has to be charged separately

In a BaaS model, the cost of batteries is not limited to financing. A fixed fee is also payable for battery usage, which in some models is charged on a per kilometer basis. This means that buying a car will cost less initially, but then you will have to pay according to the battery usage.

It is to be noted that this charge does not include the cost of charging, servicing or repairing the car. Customer has to pay for all these items separately.

The customer will also usually have the option to buy the car and the battery. At the same time, if a person does not want to spend much money initially, he can choose the BaaS model.

Who is BaaS useful for?

BaaS can be especially useful for people who want to keep their initial costs down when buying an EV. However, its benefits will not be the same for every customer. This will also depend on the distance you cover each day.
