This time during Navratri, a mixed picture was seen in the vehicle market. On the one hand, the total sales of vehicles saw a decline, on the other hand, electric vehicles received good customer support. According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), vehicle sales in Navratri 2026 were lower compared to last year. However, the increase in demand for EVs shows that people are increasingly inclined towards electric vehicles.
According to the FADA report, a total of 11,23,086 vehicles were retailed in the country between October 11 and October 20, 2026. 12,01,479 vehicles were sold during Navratri 2025. Thus, the total sales decreased by 6.52% on an annual basis. FADA said last year’s festive season coincided with the implementation of GST 2.0. Due to this, there was a sudden increase in the purchase of vehicles which had been postponed earlier. Compared to the same sales last year, this time has decreased. At the same time, the picture is better than Navratri 2024. That year, 8,85,998 vehicles were sold in 10 days. In comparison, sales in 2026 were 26.76% higher.
Decline in sales of cars and bikes
In Navratri 2026 sales of two-wheelers also saw a decline. 8,34,075 two-wheelers were sold during this period, as against 8,58,027 last year. That means sales were down by 2.79%. The decline in sales of passenger vehicles was also higher. While 2,34,004 passenger vehicles were sold in Navratri 2025, this year their number has come down to 1,82,728. This is a decrease of 21.91%. Lower sales of this segment was the main reason behind the decline in total vehicle sales.
Three-wheeler sales also declined by 7.51% year-on-year to 45,735 units. 49,450 three-wheelers were sold in the same period last year. On the other hand, there was a marginal increase in the sales of commercial vehicles. Their sales increased by 1.12% to 35,618 units. Tractor sales increased by 0.89% to 22,690 units. At the same time, sales of wheeled construction equipment fell by 1.97% to 2,240 units.
26.78% increase in sales of electric vehicles
Amid the decline in the overall vehicle market, sales of electric vehicles presented a different picture. A total of 1,17,437 EVs were sold in Navratri 2026, compared to 92,628 last year. That is, the sale of electric vehicles has increased by 26.78%. Even compared to Navratri 2024, EV sales were 83.06% higher.
Demand for electric two-wheelers was highest. 75,758 units were sold, which is 33.41% higher than last year’s 56,787 units. Sales of electric three-wheelers increased by 10.51% to 28,086 units. At the same time, 12,305 units of electric passenger vehicles were sold, showing an increase of 25.97% year-on-year. Sales of electric commercial vehicles recorded the fastest percentage increase. Their sales increased by 96.04% to 1,288 units from 657 units last year.
According to FADA president Sai Girdhar, electric vehicles accounted for around 10.5% of total vehicle sales during Navratri 2026. Last year it was around 7.7%. That is, despite the decline in total sales, the share of EVs in the vehicle market has increased.
