Bank of Baroda Shares: A shocking incident was seen in the stock market on Wednesday. As the saying goes, instead of reprimanding a thieving policeman, something similar has happened to the Bank of Baroda. In fact, the same person from whom the bank has to recover a loan of Rs 2800 crore has claimed about Rs 1.44 lakh crore against the bank. The impact of this strange news was immediate on the stock market. Investors panicked, sending the bank’s shares down 3 percent. The whole matter is related to BR Shetty, the founder of NMC Healthcare.

The debtor himself filed a heavy suit

The whole matter is very interesting. Bank of Baroda is continuously trying to recover its dues from BR Shetty. The bank has to take about Rs 2,800 crore from them. Legal action is going on from India to UAE for this. The bank has also obtained several orders against it. But now Shetty has filed a case against the bank along with 25 others in the Bombay High Court seeking damages of $15 billion (roughly Rs 1.44 lakh crore). This amount is so big that it was sure to cause a stir in the market.

Shetty alleged fraud

BR Shetty has made several serious allegations against the bank in his petition. He says that bank officials helped him in fraudulent transactions in his companies. Money laundering warnings were ignored. Shetty also alleged that the loan was passed using his forged signature. It has sought $5 billion in direct damages and $5 billion in business losses to compensate for these losses. Apart from this, he has demanded 5 billion dollars in compensation for damage to his reputation. Apart from this, he has also demanded 18 percent interest per annum on the entire amount.

The bank termed these claims as baseless

The bank has also clarified its position when such a big issue came up. The bank says it has not yet received any official notice from the court. They will give a strict legal response to these claims as soon as they receive the notice. The bank recalled that Shetty had also filed a similar case in New York. That case was dismissed in July 2024. In the year 2021, the Karnataka High Court also restrained Shetty from selling his property. After this he has appealed to declare himself bankrupt.

The effect of fear is being seen in the stock market

This shocking news caused panic among the bank’s investors. The bank’s share in early trading was Rs. 231.30, which on Tuesday was Rs. was 238.43. So far in the year 2026, the bank’s shares have fallen by around 22.7 percent. An interesting fact is that today the total market value of Bank of Baroda is around 1.2 lakh crore rupees. While Shetty has filed a case of 1.44 lakh crore rupees. This means that they are being sued for more than the total value of the bank.

A new form of an old controversy

The case is also linked to an old bank dispute. This year, in July 2026, Bank of Baroda agreed to pay $600 million (roughly Rs 5,700 crore) to settle the affairs of the NMC group. The bank paid this amount and closed the matter. The bank said that after this agreement, the pending cases in the Abu Dhabi Court have been disposed of. But now Shetty says that he was not involved in this agreement. Therefore, their rights claims are still alive and should be redressed.
