5 Trillion Economy: The Indian economy is currently standing at an interesting turning point. On the one hand, the country’s domestic economic growth is becoming faster than before, on the other hand, the falling rupee against the dollar has become an obstacle in the way of big dreams. In the year 2027, India is going to become the fourth largest economic power in the world, surpassing Britain along with Japan. But the country will now have to wait an extra year to become a $5 trillion economy.

According to International Monetary Fund (IMF) October ‘World Economic Outlook’ (WEO) data, the Indian economy will now cross the $5 trillion mark in 2029 instead of 2028. In April, it was estimated that India would achieve this milestone only in 2028, but the fall of the rupee has changed the full term of the dollar.

A weak rupee against the dollar spoils the math for 2028

To determine the economic ranking of any country globally, its GDP is measured in dollars. The IMF has raised the estimate of India’s economic output in rupee terms, but lowered the nominal GDP estimate for the year 2028 in dollar terms. Six months ago in April, it was estimated that the Indian economy would be worth $5.1 trillion by 2028. Now it has come down to 4.996 trillion dollars.

According to the IMF’s October data, India’s economy will be $4.06 trillion in 2026 and $4.52 trillion in 2027. After stagnating at $4.996 trillion in 2028, it will reach $5.54 trillion in 2029. It is clear that this is the reason for the slowdown in the economy that the target is not slowing down. rate

Due to the exchange rate shock, the country’s earnings in rupees increased.

The special thing about this report is that India’s economic output has increased in local currency i.e. rupees. India’s nominal GDP in rupee terms is estimated at Rs 477.1 lakh crore in 2028, up 1.1 percent from the April estimate of Rs 471.9 lakh crore. But when converted to dollars, economic output for the same year falls by about $63 billion due to a weaker rupee.

The IMF has lowered the projected level of the rupee against the dollar for the year 2027 from 93 to 95. At the same time, the average exchange rate estimate for 2028 in April was Rs. 93.3 to Rs. 95.5 per dollar. Money Control calculations show that if the APR rate had remained the same at 93.3 in 2028, Rs. 477.1 lakh crore GDP would have been around $5.11 trillion and India would have easily crossed the target. Let us tell you that the rupee has fallen by more than 5 percent since the beginning of this year. It closed at 96.73 on Friday, after which the RBI had to step in to stem the decline.

Japan and Britain will be left behind in 2027, followed by Germany in 2031

Despite the delay, India’s stature in global rankings will rise rapidly. In 2027, India will become the world’s fourth largest economy with a GDP of $4.52 trillion, ahead of only the US, China and Germany. Then Britain’s GDP is estimated at $4.49 trillion and Japan’s GDP at $4.47 trillion. However, the distance between the three countries is very small, so currency fluctuations can change the final results. Going forward, the Indian economy will be worth $6.13 trillion in 2030 and $6.74 trillion in 2031. In 2031, India will overtake Germany to become the third largest economy in the world.

India’s economic growth will be strong based on domestic demand

Amid the decline in the dollar figure, the relief is that the IMF is more confident than ever about India’s domestic growth. In the October report, India’s real GDP growth forecast for the fiscal year 2027 (FY27) was raised to 7 percent from 6.4 percent on the back of strong domestic demand and accelerated economic activity. Also, nominal GDP growth in local currency is also expected to pick up to 11.7 percent in 2027 from the previous estimate of 10.8 percent. These figures show that growth momentum within the country is strong, only the weakness of the rupee has slightly increased the time it takes for the dollar to reach the milestone.
