TVS Family Controversy: TVS Group, one of India’s oldest renowned industrial houses, is going through an internal struggle these days. The matter is complex regarding the financial distribution of the property among the members of the Venu Srinivasan family. The good thing about this entire matter is that there is no controversy regarding the day-to-day operations of the companies or the use of the TVS brand. The main cause of dispute is the financial division of the family property. Big names like Sudarshan Venu, Lakshmi Venu to Mallika Srinivasan are at the center of this entire debate. Let us understand what this controversy is and how it started.
What is the real root of the dispute?
The Venu Srinivasan family handles many big businesses. These include TVS Holdings, TVS Motor Company, TVS Credit and Sundaram-Clayton. It is very clear who will handle the affairs of these companies. But, no final agreement has been reached on how the family assets will be divided financially.
The whole matter gained momentum in April 2025, when TVS Holdings shared an important piece of information. The company said Sudarshan Venu has been identified by the trust as a ‘Significant Beneficial Owner’ (SBO). An SBO is a person who has actual control or ownership rights over a company. Although this information has come to light, this alone does not resolve the matter of division of family property. After this revelation, family differences over wealth began to surface.
Role of mother Mallika Srinivasan
Mallika Srinivasan is playing a big role in solving this family dispute. He is Chairperson Emerita of TAFE. Along with Lakshmi Venu, she is also the mother of Sudarshan Venu. According to industry sources, Mallika wants all the family members to sit together. She wants a negotiated distribution of property that is acceptable to everyone. He believes that instead of allowing the dispute to fester, the right conclusion should be reached peacefully. However, despite all efforts, no concrete decision has been taken yet.
Why didn’t the old agreement happen?
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the families in March 2024. But there is no mention of economic partnership in this agreement. The agreement was mainly on how the TVS brand would be used. It was also decided that no member of the family should work against each other’s business. This is the reason why despite the 2024 agreement, the issue of property distribution remains stuck.
Apart from this, a major split of TVS Group in 2020 is also being discussed a lot. The 115-year-old group was then divided between various branches of founder TV Sundaram Iyengar’s family. At that time the properties were valued and each was given his share. It is believed that Lakshmi Venu is in favor of adopting a similar 2020 method to resolve the current dispute. But that division was between different branches, whereas this dispute is within the same family (Venu Srinivasan). Therefore, it is not easy to directly apply that old formula here.
How much control does the company have?
The Venu Srinivasan family is associated with many companies in the TVS ecosystem. Sudarshan Venu is in command of TVS Motor Company. Lakshmi Venu is handling Sundaram-Clayton. TVS Holdings is the company through which the family holds its stake in the rest of the business.
Looking at TVS Holdings data, the promoter group holds 74.45% stake. 66.55% of the shares are held by Venu Srinivasan alone through VS Trust. But just looking at the shareholding cannot determine how the entire property will be distributed. Apart from shares, property distribution also includes many other things like liabilities, trust arrangement etc. Currently the entire family is trying to find a solution through dialogue.
