There is good news for students studying MBBS. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to give one extra chance to the students taking admission in the year 2019-20 and thereafter to clear the first year examination. Under this, eligible students will now get a total of five chances to clear the first year examination. Earlier this number was four. This decision may benefit students whose studies are stuck in first year subjects due to backlog or other issues. However, certain conditions have been laid down for this exemption.
There will be a fifth chance for the first year examination
As per the new NMC decision, eligible students taking admission in MBBS in 2019-20 and beyond will be given one extra grace attempt to clear the first professional exam. This will give the students a second chance to pass the remaining subjects of the first year. This relaxation may also be applicable to students who have exceeded the prescribed period of four years to complete the first year course. However, for this, their admission should be valid and their admission should not have been canceled by the concerned university or college.
The decision was taken on the demand of the students
The 18th meeting of NMC held on 23 September 2026 discussed the proposal to grant additional opportunity. The Commission received several applications in this regard from students, universities and other concerned parties. The students demanded additional opportunities, citing the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on studies, health issues and personal circumstances.
Discount for one time only
The NMC has clarified that this decision is a one-time special concession given for pending cases. This will not be considered as a permanent rule. Students who have already used the Mercy Attempt and completed all five opportunities will not receive a sixth opportunity.
MBBS has to be completed within 10 years
Despite the additional opportunity, the maximum age limit for completing MBBS studies has not been changed. Students must complete the course within 10 years from the date of admission. NMC has directed all medical colleges and universities to process the cases of eligible students as per this decision.
