Students preparing to pursue a career in the field of management face the dilemma of choosing the right option between MBA and PGDM. Both the courses are related to the study of business and management and after this there are many career opportunities in the corporate sector. However, MBA is a degree course, while PGDM is a diploma program. There are some differences between the two in the institution’s education, fees, curriculum and structure. In such a situation, before taking admission, students need to understand which course can be more useful according to their career goals.
MBA degree
Both MBA and PGDM are postgraduate level management courses. MBA degrees are usually awarded by universities or their affiliated colleges. While PGDM courses are mainly offered by autonomous management institutes.
PGDM Diploma
Many reputed B-schools in the country offer management programs like PGDM or PGP. Despite the difference between a degree and a diploma, a PGDM from a good institution is considered very useful from a job perspective. After both the courses, one can get opportunities in management, marketing, finance, HR and other fields.
What is the difference between study and course?
In MBA, relatively more emphasis is given on management theory and academic aspects. In comparison, in PGDM, more emphasis is placed on developing practical knowledge and skills as per industry requirements. The MBA curriculum is often decided by the university. While PGDM institutes can prepare the syllabus at their own level. This makes it relatively easy to update the PGDM syllabus according to changes in the industry.
Admission and Fees
Admission to both MBA and PGDM can be done through CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT, ATMA and various state level entrance exams. However, it depends on the admission process of the concerned institution. Talking about fees, many MBA programs related to government or universities are available at relatively low cost. On the other hand, the fees of reputed PGDM institutes may be higher. However, there is no fixed rule that MBA will always be cheaper and PGDM will always be expensive.
Which one to choose?
An MBA can be a good option if a student prioritizes academic studies and a degree. While students who want to emphasize on corporate sector, industry exposure and practical management skills can consider PGDM. Finally, the reputation of the institution, placement, fees, curriculum and career goals should be given more importance than the name of the course.
