Indian scientist Ashok Sen has made the country proud. It has been announced that he will be awarded the prestigious Oscar Klein Medal in the field of theoretical physics. He became the first Indian scientist to receive this honour. Professor Sen is known for his research on string theory, black holes and fundamental laws of the universe. He has received many international honors before. His educational journey and scientific achievements are an inspiration to the youth who want to make their career by researching in the field of science.

Professor Ashok Sen of ICTS Bengaluru will be awarded the prestigious Oscar Klein Medal for his contribution to theoretical physics. This honor has been conferred by the Nobel Committee of Stockholm University and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences since 1988. With this achievement, Ashok Sen became the first Indian to receive this medal. On the occasion of the honor, he also gave a lecture on Gravity from Strings and Strings from Gravity at Stockholm University.

Research on String Theory

Professor Ashok Sen is known for his important research on string theory. This theory helps to understand the fundamental particles and forces of the universe. In physics, understanding the laws of gravity and quantum physics simultaneously is a major challenge. String theory works towards bridging this gap.

A contribution to the understanding of modern physics

Ashok Sen has done important work on S-duality, string field theory and calculations related to black holes. His research has contributed to advancing the understanding of modern physics.

It has received many honors before

Before the Oscar Clean Medal, Ashok Sen received prestigious honors such as the Dirac Medal and the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. Along with this, Indian scientist Deepak Dhar has also been awarded with Dirac Medal. Indian-origin physicist Jainendra Jain has received the Wolf Prize. These achievements show the strong presence of Indian scientists in the global science world.

Where did the journey to becoming a scientist begin?

Ashok Sen was born in 1956 in Kolkata. His father taught physics at a Scottish church college. He completed his B.Sc from Presidency College and then did his higher education from IIT Kanpur. For further studies he went to America, where he obtained his PhD from Stony Brook University. He also worked at Stanford University and Fermilab.

What did you do after coming back to India?

He later returned to India and joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). In the year 1995, he started working at Harish Chandra Research Institute in Prayagraj. His journey shows that curiosity, hard work and dedication to research can create international recognition in the field of science.
