The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay is gearing up to change its exam protocol. Following the alleged suicide of student Sahil Wakode at IIT Bombay, the proposed new rules are being considered. Under these revised rules, students will be given a chance to complete the paper even if they are caught cheating. Along with this, many points have been added in the proposed revised rules in the interest of students. For example, the revised rules proposed as interim instructions are intended to handle cases related to suspicion of cheating and use of unfair means and to ensure that the student is not left alone in such a situation. The proposed rules have been tabled in a special meeting of the IIT Bombay Senate on Wednesday. The approval for its implementation is pending.
Let’s know the whole matter in detail. Let’s find out what new rules have been proposed by IIT Bombay regarding changes in exam protocol.
An 8 member committee has given suggestions
The proposed revised rules, which IIT Bombay is considering as interim recommendations, have come from an 8-member committee. There are 4 faculty members in this committee and 4 students are also included in the committee. The committee has presented its interim report at a special meeting of the IIT Bombay Senate on Wednesday. The committee was formed after the alleged suicide case of second year BTech student Sahil Wakode. Sahil committed suicide on September 18.
If counterfeiting is suspected, you will receive a new booklet
Under the proposed revised rules on changes in the IIT Bombay examination protocol, if an invigilator suspects that a student is doubting during the examination, he will confiscate the relevant material. He will also note the matter and issue a fresh answer booklet to the student. The observer will record the entire incident in a form. This will enable the student to continue with the paper.
The Disciplinary Action Committee will take action, students will have an opportunity to present their side.
Under the proposed revised rules, the role of inspector will end with the registration of a case of fraud. Further action will be taken by the Disciplinary Action Committee. At the same time, the proposed rules ensure that the accused student gets an opportunity to present his side. The accused student will record his statement separately in the presence of the staff.
An alert will be sent to QRT
The proposed revised rules have made arrangements to inform the QRT helpline as soon as the paper is completed, whereby an alert will be sent to the QRT helpline immediately after the student leaves the examination hall. This entire exercise is to ensure that the accused student is not left alone immediately after the examination.
Barring new rules, the 2015 Rules came into effect temporarily
To deal with cases such as cheating at IIT Bombay, rules with stricter penalties were implemented from July, replacing the 2015 rules. The IIT Bombay administration has banned the new rules. Along with this, the rules of 2015 have also been implemented.
The new rules provided for giving fail and repeat (FR) grades and suspension for one semester if a student is caught carrying a mobile in the exam hall. Under the 2015 rules, there is a provision of one grade penalty for carrying a phone and FR grade for using a phone.
