Russian President Vladimir Putin has apprised US President Donald Trump of Iran’s stance on a possible peace deal in the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Saturday that Tehran’s position was clarified in a phone call between the two leaders on Friday. However, the Kremlin did not say how Trump responded to Putin’s message, nor did it elaborate on Iran’s stance on resolving the conflict.
In fact, diplomatic efforts to end the more than seven-month-long Iran conflict, which began with the attack on Iran by the US and Israel in February this year, have stalled for months. President Putin met with Iranian President Masoud Pezheshkian during a summit in Turkmenistan earlier this week, where he expressed his desire to help bring peace.
A Memorandum of Understanding was agreed upon between America and Iran
However, the US And while Iran agreed to a memorandum of understanding in June that laid out a framework for ending their conflict, Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz forced the resumption of US military operations. In such a situation, diplomatic efforts to end the conflict were put on hold. Apart from this, an indirect dialogue between Washington and Tehran was also held recently on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, but no concrete results could be achieved from that either.
Trump mediated to end the war in Ukraine
President Trump, who will take office in January 2025, has also tried to mediate an end to the more than four-and-a-half-year war in Ukraine, but talks between Moscow and Kiev have nearly stalled and attacks from both sides have intensified in recent months. Meanwhile, US, Ukrainian and European officials met in Miami on Friday, as Washington resumed diplomatic efforts to end the fighting and find a way out of the standoff.
Russian attack kills 12 in Ukraine
Ukrainian President Zelensky said on Saturday that a Russian attack killed at least 12 people, including three children, in Ukraine’s Zaporizhia region. Russian air bombs attacked residential buildings in the region, at least 14 people injured.
The attack came a day after US President Donald Trump announced a deal to buy Russian diesel, which Kiev warned could help finance Moscow’s war in Ukraine. The announcement reversed years of US pressure over Russia’s attack on Ukraine and Trump’s demand to rein in rising fuel prices ahead of US midterm elections.
