Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia is creating a security zone in its territory near the border with Ukraine. He made it clear that there would be no compromise on the region during future peace talks with Ukraine. Putin, who arrived at the army command post in military uniform on Friday, said the move was in response to Ukraine’s 2024-25 incursion into Russia’s Kursk region. This security zone will be about 660 kilometers long. About 70% of them are currently under Russian control.
Putin said the Russian military was tasked with two tasks. First, the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Russian territory and second, the creation of a security zone in the border area of Ukraine. According to him, the army is successfully working on both these goals. Russia aims to fully secure its border areas in the future.
What measures will be taken for security zones?
Putin has talked about creating a security zone before, but this time he explained its length, saying there would be no peace talks over it. The plan requires Russia to gain control of land in Ukraine’s Sumy and Kharkiv regions. Russia has not claimed these two areas as part of itself after launching a war against Ukraine in 2022.
Putin said Russian forces still held a little more than 10% of Ukraine’s Donetsk region and 16.5% of Zaporozhye region. He praised Russian attacks on Ukrainian military, industrial and transport targets. He also said that Russia’s air defense needs to be strengthened.
The Russia-US deal was signed last week
This statement comes at a time when talks about war are going on. Last week, an agreement was reached with Russia to sell diesel to the US. After this, the relationship between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has increased again.
Over the past nine days, Ukrainian drones have attacked several Russian data centers and a major oil refinery. At the same time, Russia is attacking Ukrainian cities, power plants and ports. Meanwhile, Putin’s investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev said Russia and the US are discussing several new joint projects. It also includes plans to build a nuclear-powered data center.
