President Donald Trump is confused about plans to show live the execution of former Army Major Nidal Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people in the United States. After openly supporting the decision earlier, Trump is now taking opinions from various people on this. According to an Axios report, Trump has told a close aide that the December 3 execution cannot be live streamed. In this matter, Trump is facing opposition from lawmakers from both parties and advisers present inside and outside the White House.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Thursday that Hassan’s execution could be shown live, so that the public could understand the serious consequences of such crimes. If this happens, it will be the first live broadcast of the execution of a person in America. However, the idea has been criticized both within the US and internationally. After this, Trump’s attitude is also changing.

First support, now rethink the decision

Trump initially supported the live telecast of the execution, saying, ‘Of course, I support it.’ However, he later said that this decision was being taken to set an example before the people and that he himself was not involved in this decision. Last Saturday, Trump made it clear that he would make the final decision. According to him, showing the gallows can deter others from committing such crimes, but there is also the option of not showing it.

According to the report, Trump has spoken to people close to him on the matter and tried to get their opinion. An administration official also said he thought Trump would not allow live broadcasts, although the final decision rests with the president.

Who is Nidal Hasan, who is to be hanged?

Nidal Hasan is a former major in the US Army. On November 5, 2009, he opened fire on the Fort Hood military base in Texas. Thirteen people, including a pregnant woman, were killed in the incident, while 32 people were injured. At that time the soldiers were standing in the queue for medical examination. The attack was one of the deadliest terrorist attacks on American soil since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

After this incident, the US Senate’s Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee report criticized the performance of the army. Reportedly, due to caution over politically sensitive issues, officials were unable to identify Hasan’s growing radicalism in time.
