India has said that there is no fixed time yet for the extradition of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. India has received a formal request from Bangladesh to extradite Hasina. This request is currently under legal investigation. India says that the decision will be taken according to the prescribed legal and diplomatic process. Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi gave this information at the Bay of Bengal Dialogue 2026 held in Dhaka. He said that India could not yet give any specific time frame in the case of Hasina’s extradition. The matter is going through the legal process.
Sheikh Hasina suddenly left the country and came to India in August 2024 amid the growing political crisis in Bangladesh. Indian officials said the situation was deteriorating rapidly at the time. In such a situation, India had no choice but to allow Hasina to come to India, considering humanitarian and security reasons. India says that allowing Hasina to enter India was necessary to maintain stability amid the growing crisis across the border at the time. Bangladesh now has a government led by Tariq Rehman. The government has formally requested India to repatriate Hasina to Bangladesh. Action is going on in many cases against Hasina in Bangladesh.
A decision will be taken under the 2013 treaty
An extradition treaty was signed between India and Bangladesh in 2013, which was amended in 2016. Under this treaty, there is a provision to send the accused back to each other’s country. However, there are exceptions related to political offenses and some domestic judicial matters. Hasina’s extradition petition is under legal investigation in India. In such a situation, the government cannot take direct political decisions. The role of Indian courts will also be important and further decisions will be taken based on the legislative process.
Relationships were not affected
Even though Hasina’s extradition case is going on, talks are going on between India and Bangladesh. The two countries are working on issues such as trade, energy grid connectivity and cross-border infrastructure. India maintains that changes in Bangladesh’s internal politics or its relations with other countries have not affected the basic relations between the two countries. India now has to strike a balance between the extradition treaty with Bangladesh, humanitarian aspects and long-term strategic ties.
