Lee entered the final after producing an impressive run through the 57kg competition. He continued that form against Bravo-Young, finishing the championship bout in just 26 seconds.

The American wrestler’s 10-0 victory secured the gold medal through technical superiority, leaving Bravo-Young unable to extend the contest.

The result marked the latest milestone in a career that has already included Olympic and international success.

Spencer Lee’s Road to the 2026 World Championship Gold

Lee produced a series of convincing performances before reaching the final in Kazakhstan.

He opened his campaign with an 11-0 technical-fall victory over Guatemala’s Edwin Segura Guerra. He followed that result with a 12-2 win against Iran’s Milad Valizadeh in the round of 16.

In the quarterfinals, Lee defeated Russia’s Abubakar Mutaliev 11-0 to move closer to the medal rounds.

His semifinal against Azerbaijan’s Islam Bazarganov was another impressive performance. Lee secured a fall after trailing 10-5, booking his place in the gold-medal match.

He then completed the tournament with his 10-0 victory over Bravo-Young.

Spencer Lee Becomes Sixth Hawkeye Wrestling World Champion

Lee’s achievement also adds to the history of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club and the University of Iowa wrestling program.

He becomes the sixth Hawkeye wrestler to capture a World Championship. The previous champions include Thomas Gilman, Bill Zadick, Tom Brands, Terry Brands and Chris Campbell.

Gilman was the most recent Iowa wrestler to win a World title, achieving the feat in 2021.

Lee’s victory also highlights the influence of Iowa head coach Tom Brands, who has coached 26 Olympic and World Team members during his time in Iowa City.

Olympic Silver Medal Adds to Spencer Lee’s Wrestling Achievements

The World Championship is another significant achievement for Lee, who has built an impressive record across international competitions.

He won the silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games and previously captured two U20 World Championship titles and one U17 World Championship.

His success at the senior level now adds another major international honor to that record.

Lee’s gold medal also represents the latest achievement for the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, which was established in 1973 to provide athletes with the coaching, training and resources needed to compete at the highest levels of international wrestling.
