IIT Admission 2026: Share of female students in IIT crosses 20%, know how many seats got

The JEE Advanced 2026 exam for admission to IITs has seen an improvement in the performance of students. This year more than 10,000 female students have qualified the exam, which has happened for the first time in the last six years. However, even as the number of women candidates qualifying has increased, their share of admissions to IITs has increased marginally. The report of the Joint Implementation Committee of IIT Roorkee has revealed the information regarding the exam results and seat allotment. According to the report, out of a total of 18,861 admissions, girl students got 3,851 seats.

More than 10 thousand students are eligible

A total of 43,112 women candidates had registered for JEE Advanced 2026. Of these, 40,562 female students appeared for both the papers and 10,107 managed to clear the exam. The success rate based on the number of female students enrolled was 23.4 percent, compared to 21.7 percent in 2025.

24.9 percent of the female students who appeared for both the papers passed the exam. Last year, 9,404 female students cleared JEE Advanced. This year the number of women candidates has increased. However, the share of girl students among the total qualified candidates was 17.76 percent.

Girl students have got 3,851 seats in IITs

A total of 18,861 seats were admitted in IITs. Of these, girl students have got 3,851 seats, which is 20.22 percent of the total admission. In the year 2025, this figure was 20.15 percent. That is, this time there has been a slight increase in the share of girl students. Of these, 3,777 seats were found under supernumerary seats reserved for girl students. While 37 female students took admission in gender neutral seats. The objective of introducing additional seats for girl students is to increase their share at the undergraduate level in IITs to at least 20 per cent.

AIR 77 of Top Female Candidate

The top performing female candidate in JEE Advanced 2026 scored 280 marks and secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 77. He scored 101 in Mathematics, 86 in Physics and 93 in Chemistry. At the same time, 97 of the top 100 ranked candidates took admission in IIT Bombay, Delhi and Madras. Of these, 68 top rankers took admission in IIT Bombay alone.

The success rate of SC and ST candidates increased

The performance of SC and ST category candidates has also improved this year. The success rate of SC candidates increased from 40.41 percent to 50.16 percent. At the same time, the success rate of ST candidates increased from 33.99 percent to 42.14 percent. This time 15,856 SC and 6,379 ST candidates appeared for the exam. On the other hand, the success rate of general category has decreased from 43 percent to 39.8 percent. The success rate of the OBC-NCL category has also come down from 18.2 per cent to 17.5 per cent.

56,880 candidates cleared the exam

JEE Advanced 2026 was conducted on May 17 in two shifts. As many as 1,87,389 candidates had registered for the examination, out of which 1,79,694 appeared for both the papers. A total of 56,880 candidates were successful in the examination. According to the report, some of these candidates are also eligible for a one-year preparatory course.
