September 2026 was a great year for India’s auto sector. Consumers increased vehicle purchases ahead of the festive season. This was also reflected in the sales of passenger vehicles, which reached an all-time high in the month of September. However, with this increase in sales, the stock of vehicles at the dealerships has also increased. In such a situation dealers now have a challenge to sell more vehicles.
According to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), an auto dealers body, 4,27,213 passenger vehicles were sold across the country in September 2026. This is an increase of 32.10 percent compared to September last year. At the same time, compared to August 2026, sales increased by 6.17 percent. It is clear from this performance that there is good interest among consumers in buying cars.
Sales increased, but so did inventory of vehicles at dealerships
Car sales set a new record in September, but growing stock has become a concern for dealers. Vehicle inventory at dealerships has increased by about five days to 43 to 45 days compared to August. According to FADA, generally around 21 days of stock is considered good.
According to the report, nearly 60 percent of dealers said they had excess stock in September. This means that companies and dealerships will now be under pressure to maintain sales momentum and reduce existing stock.
There was a boom in the entire auto market
Not only did car sales pick up in September, but the entire auto market also performed brilliantly. Total retail sales of all types of vehicles stood at 25,36,920 units. Which is 31.82 percent more than September 2025 and 4.69 percent more than August 2026.
However, FADA advises caution when interpreting this large increase in annual sales. Before the implementation of GST 2.0 in September 2025, consumers postponed purchases. Because of this last year’s sales base was weak. In such a scenario, this year’s growth may not be seen as just an increase in demand.
Sales of two-wheelers and commercial vehicles also brightened
Two-wheeler sales were also strong in September. A total of 17,90,188 two-wheelers were sold during the period, which is 33.08 percent higher than last year. It was also the best September ever for the two-wheeler market.
The commercial vehicle segment has also set a new record. For the first time in September, sales of these vehicles crossed one lakh units in a month. A total of 1,03,557 commercial vehicles were sold, showing a year-on-year increase of 37.62 percent.
Will monitor demand for festivals in October
According to FADA, the actual picture of sales will be revealed during the festive season in October. About 75.57 percent of dealers expect their sales to increase this month. Delivery of pre-booked vehicles may also increase during Navratri and Dussehra.
However, dealers will face some challenges. Higher stock already available at dealerships, increased vehicle prices and a higher base of comparison due to last year’s strong sales may affect October’s performance. In such a scenario, the coming months will tell how sustainable the September surge is and how much festive demand helps to reduce the increased stocks.
