Students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) are on hunger strike demanding reinstatement of student union elections. However, the atmosphere recently heated up with attempts to forcefully remove the students on hunger strike, which brought the university administration and the agitating students face-to-face. In view of all these incidents, the Jamia administration has announced the formation of a 7-member high-level committee to resolve the matter.

Let’s know the whole matter in detail. Let’s know what the committee formed by the Jamia administration will do. Let’s know when student union election was not held in Jamia and what is the reason.

After the meeting, a committee of 7 members was formed

Students’ hunger strike continues in Jamia demanding resumption of student union elections. So after the recent uproar, a meeting was organized in the university regarding this. In a meeting held late on Sunday evening, Vice Chancellor of Jamia Prof. Mazhar Asif, Registrar Prof. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, Controller of Examination Prof. Ehteshamul Haq, Dean of various Faculties, Dean Student Welfare, Dean Academic Affairs, Chief Proctor, Provost, other Chief Officers of JMI and public officials were present. The meeting discussed the demands of the agitating students, including a hunger strike, after which a high-level committee was formed to redress the grievances of the students and restore normalcy in the campus.

The committee will do this work

The Jamia administration has constituted a 7-member high-level committee comprising senior deans and professors of the university. The committee will interact with the protesting students, examine their demands and take necessary steps to restore peace and order in the campus.

The university issued a statement saying that the university administration is committed to resolving the issue through meaningful dialogue and discussion based on mutual trust and understanding. The administration expects the same cooperation from the protesting students and other concerned parties.

Jamia has not held student union elections since 2006.

Jamia has not held student union elections since 2006. The student union elections were called off in 2006 by the university administration after incidents of violent clashes, attacks on teachers and frequent disruptions in classes emerged. However, in the meantime many demands were made to hold Jamia Students Union elections. An application was also filed in the court regarding this. In this regard, during the hearing in the Delhi High Court in the year 2022, accepting the arguments and contentions of the Jamia Standing Council, no notice was given regarding the election of the Student Union.

A ‘Subject Committee’ is elected

Students union elections are not conducted in Jamia since 2026, but a robust and democratic system for ‘Subject Association’ elections has been implemented in all departments and centres. Under this system, students elect three office-bearers—Vice-President, General Secretary and Joint Secretary—in their respective departments and centers through secret ballot. Over the past few years, this system has proved to be very helpful for students.
