The New York Giants are releasing running back Najee Harris after five games with the team, according to reports published Tuesday, October 20. The move comes after the veteran struggled to make an impact and publicly questioned the team’s running back rotation.
Harris joined New York in August after spending the 2025 season with the Los Angeles Chargers. His time with the Giants lasted roughly two months, as the team continues to evaluate its options in the backfield.
Najee Harris Struggles to Find His Rhythm in New York
Harris carried the ball 31 times for 99 yards across five appearances with the Giants, averaging 3.2 yards per carry. His production fell short of expectations for a veteran who recorded four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
His most recent performance came in Sunday’s 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Harris received four carries but managed just two rushing yards, adding to the questions surrounding his role in New York’s offense.
Running Back Rotation Adds to Giants’ Decision
Harris expressed frustration with the Giants’ approach to rotating running backs after the loss to New Orleans. He indicated that frequent substitutions made it difficult to establish a rhythm and adjust to opposing defenses during games.
Head coach John Harbaugh has been managing a crowded backfield that includes Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary. The competition for touches has limited opportunities for Harris, who never recorded more than 16 offensive snaps in a game with New York, according to reports.
Achilles Injury Complicated Harris’ NFL Comeback
Harris entered the 2025 season with the Chargers after four years as a key part of Pittsburgh’s offense. However, a torn Achilles tendon suffered in Week 3 ended his first season in Los Angeles and interrupted his progress.
Before the injury, Harris had established himself as a durable option who could handle a significant workload. He rushed for at least 1,000 yards in each of his first four NFL seasons after Pittsburgh selected him in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
His release from New York leaves the 28-year-old running back looking for another opportunity. Whether another NFL team pursues him will depend on its roster needs and assessment of his recent performances.
