The IPO of Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio platform opens for public subscription on Wednesday, October 21. Shareholders of Reliance Industries received Rs. There is an additional opportunity to acquire shares through a special ‘Shareholder Reservation’ of Rs 2,500 crore. India’s largest public offering is expected to attract huge demand, so eligible investors can improve their chances of getting shares by applying under both ‘Shareholder’ and ‘Retail’ categories.

Jio Platforms offers eligible shareholders of Reliance Industries Rs. 2,500 crore shares have been reserved. This gives them an opportunity to be included in a separate allotment pool, so that they do not have to compete only with other retail investors.

Rs. 30,213 crore ahead of this IPO, this reservation is much talked about. Especially when around Rs. 8,110 crore in the company’s ‘anchor book’ against an allocation of around Rs. A bid of 2.5 lakh crore was received. However, mere eligibility does not guarantee shares. How many shares an investor will get depends on the demand from the shareholder category and the final basis of allotment.

Who is Eligible for Jio IPO Shareholder Quota?

Individual investors and Hindu Undivided Families (HUF), who held shares of Reliance Industries till October 14, 2026, are eligible to apply under Shareholder Reserve. The company has set October 14 – the date of publication of its ‘Red Herring Prospectus’ (RHP) – as the cut-off date for eligibility.

Investors holding only one share of Reliance Industries on this date are also eligible for this reservation. However, investors who bought RIL shares on or after October 14 will not be eligible for this. As per India’s T+1 settlement system, the last regular trading day to buy Reliance shares for eligibility was October 13. Those who missed this deadline can also apply for Jio IPO under general retail category, subject to applicable conditions.

How can shareholders improve their allocation opportunities?

To increase the chances of allotment, investors can apply under both shareholder and retail categories. Eligible shareholders of Reliance Industries have the benefit of being able to submit two different IPO applications using the same PAN.

An eligible investor can apply once under shareholder reservation and once under general retail category. Submitting duplicate applications under the same category may result in rejection, but as per Jio’s offer documents, applications under these two different categories are allowed. This gives investors access to two different allocation pools, which can improve their overall chances of acquiring shares.

For example, an investor can apply for one lot under shareholder category and another lot under retail category. These applications will be considered separately, and allotment will be based on the demand of each category. Note the application size under shareholder quota. Eligible shareholders of RIL under reserve category Rs. Can apply for shares up to 2 lakhs.

The minimum application size for Jio is 12 shares, which costs Rs. 1,119 at the upper price band of Rs. is 13,428. Investors can apply in multiples of 12 shares. At the maximum price (cap price), a shareholder can bid up to 14 lots, comprising 168 shares and worth Rs. 1.87 lakh will be required.

Unlike the retail category, where normally oversubscribed issues are allotted minimum lots by draw, the Shareholder Reserve follows the ‘proportionate allotment’ method. It depends on minimum lot and stock availability.

Consequently, applying for a larger number of shares may increase the number of shares an investor receives under the pro-rata mechanism. However, even bidding for the maximum allowed quantity does not guarantee allotment, especially when there is significant oversubscription in that category.

Use the accounts of different eligible family members

Families with more than one member separately eligible for shareholder reservation may consider applying through their respective demat accounts. Subject to applicable rules, each eligible investor may also submit a separate retail application.

However, applications should be from genuine and independently eligible investors only. Multiple applications submitted under the same PAN in the same category may be treated as duplicates.
