India US Trade Deal: Big news has now surfaced on the long awaited trade agreement between New Delhi and Washington. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is on a two-day visit to India, has hinted that a trade deal between the two countries could be finalized in a few weeks. At the same time, US President Donald Trump has also expressed hope that this agreement will be approved soon. Statements by the top leaders of both countries indicate that the longstanding trade standoff between Washington and New Delhi is about to end. Now the entire focus is only on solving the technical details.
Trump has made a big statement from the White House
During a briefing with reporters at the White House on Tuesday, President Donald Trump was asked about the possibility of such an agreement. According to Bloomberg, Trump said that India wants to do a deal, America is also going to do a deal. Both countries are very close to this. Without giving further details, Trump also said that the agreement could be a very different kind of deal. Officials of both the countries are very enthusiastic about this conversation, which has been going on for more than a year. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore also recently said at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi that key issues related to the deal have been completed. According to him, both countries are very close to finalizing it. Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has also expressed enthusiasm over the progress of the talks and said both sides are now moving towards a final outcome.
Things will be resolved in a few weeks now, not months
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is on a two-day visit to India, also spoke about this deal in an interview given to Network18. Rubio expressed confidence that the two countries have come very close to an agreement. He made it clear that Washington hoped the agreement would be completed in a matter of weeks, not months. Rubio said he is not directly negotiating the deal himself, as the process is handled by the US Trade Representative. However, he is keeping a close eye on its progress.
Why is it important to agree on every word of the contract?
According to Marco Rubio, the talks are currently focused on resolving some technical aspects. He said that before an agreement is announced, it is important for both parties to properly understand and agree on the language of each provision. Rubio said the technical details matter a lot. Both countries have to agree that the language written in the deal has the same meaning for both. At present the conversation has reached this level.
What is the expectation of relaxation in tariff rates?
When asked if India could get better tariff rates than other countries, Rubio said that any trade agreement aims to get better terms than the current one. He said that the direct objective of doing this deal is to get better rates than the current rates. Rubio emphasized that it is important to make the agreement sustainable in the long term that it serves the economic interests of both countries. He believed that India, like other countries, would look to its national interests in the talks, but mutual ties would help bridge differences. Rubio said that when you’re friends and allies, you have a lot in common, so it helps to iron out differences and find a solution that works for both of you.
